Locum Consultant Breast Radiologist

Posted: 30/07/2026 | £113,565 – £150,569 per annum (pro rata for part time) | South of England

A 12 month fixed term post has arisen for an experienced Consultant Breast Radiologist to join a well established breast imaging team at a major teaching hospital on the south coast. The unit delivers a full symptomatic, screening, cross-sectional and oncoplastic service, and the post is offered on a 10 PA basis with flexible working and occasional home working considered. On-call is optional rather than required.

This will suit a radiologist who wants a high-volume unit with the full range of kit and procedures behind them, and colleagues who do this work every day.

 Key Requirements

Essential

  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • FRCR or equivalent
  • At least one year of subspecialty training in breast radiology at a recognised centre
  • NHS experience in breast radiology, including independent working in breast one-stop symptomatic clinics
  • Independent in mammogram reporting, breast and axilla ultrasound, and ultrasound-guided breast and axilla biopsies
  • Experience of training or working within the NHS National Breast Screening Programme
  • Independent performance of stereotactic vacuum procedures (VAB, VAE and localisation), with training available where needed
  • A team player, comfortable in a busy multidisciplinary setting
  • An understanding of clinical governance and audit, with audits that have changed practice

Desirable

  • CCT in Radiology
  • Publications in a radiology journal
  • Please note that NHS experience is essential for this post and the trust has confirmed it will not consider applicants without it.

Why this role is attractive

A unit with everything in one place

  • Self-contained Breast Imaging Unit with its own administrative team, covering both symptomatic and screening work
  • Three mammography units, two with stereotactic capability and two with tomosynthesis, and three ultrasound rooms
  • Breast MRI on 1.5T and 3T scanners with MR-guided biopsy carried out on site
  • Vacuum assisted biopsy, vacuum assisted excision, wire localisation and Magseed all in routine use
  • Sectra PACS with CRIS RIS and NBSS integration, so breast imaging sits alongside all other imaging
  • Colleagues and support around you
  • An established team of seven consultant breast radiologists, three advanced practitioners and a trainee consultant radiographer
  • A screening programme covering well over 100,000 eligible women, run across static and mobile units
  • High risk (NHSBSP) and moderate risk screening, with a family history clinic supported by the regional genetics service on site
  • Bi-weekly screening and symptomatic breast MDTs

A job plan with room in it

  • Two symptomatic one-stop clinics and one assessment clinic each week, shared equitably across the consultant body
  • Up to 2 PAs of general radiology, which can be shaped around your previous experience
  • On-call is optional; those who want it contribute to the GI on-call rota
  • Flexible working and occasional working from home will be considered

Life outside the hospital

  • A coastal city with a national park, sailing and the south coast beaches close by
  • Good rail and road links to London, and an airport with connections to Heathrow and Gatwick
  • The region is well known for its schools
  • The post carries a residence requirement of within ten miles or thirty minutes by road of the main hospital site, unless the trust agrees otherwise
