Consultant Radiologist – Breast and General Imaging (Two-Year Fixed Term)

NHS foundation trust in the East Midlands | Two acute hospital sites 

Overview
A two-year fixed-term consultant radiologist post with a subspecialty interest in breast imaging is available with a large NHS foundation trust in the East Midlands. The appointee will work across the trust's two acute hospitals and join an established team of consultant breast radiologists, contributing to both screening and symptomatic services alongside general reporting.

The post is open to doctors who are not yet on the GMC Specialist Register. Extension beyond the initial two years is available to post holders working towards a Portfolio Pathway submission, and the trust will support that progression.

The department
The trust runs one of the larger radiology departments in the region, with a substantial consultant body, specialty registrars on rotation and a well-developed team of reporting radiographers. The department is Quality Mark accredited and has a reputation for being friendly and supportive, with many of its own trainees returning to substantive consultant posts.

The breast service is a large integrated unit operating across both acute sites, with a static screening site and mobile screening units serving a wide population. It provides the full range of breast imaging, including symptomatic one-stop clinics, screening assessment, image-guided biopsy, pre-operative localisation, breast MRI, contrast-enhanced mammography and interval cancer review. The unit is supported by an experienced multidisciplinary team of radiologists, surgeons, oncologists, pathologists, advanced practitioners, a consultant radiographer and breast care nurses.

The post
The post carries 10 PAs, 8.5 DCC and 1.5 SPA, with part-time arrangements considered. The appointee will undertake at least five breast sessions a week on a flexible basis, covering screening and symptomatic clinics, screening mammography reads, biopsies and marker insertion, MRI breast reporting and participation in diagnostic and metastatic breast MDTs. A minimum of one PA a week is given to general reporting, including CT and plain film.

The post holder will join the diagnostic on-call rota, currently 1 in 16, within three months of starting, depending on experience and the support needed. The role includes teaching undergraduates and postgraduates through the trust's radiology academy, supervision of specialty trainees, and participation in audit and clinical governance.

Person specification
Essential
FRCR or equivalent
Full registration and a licence to practise with the GMC at the date of commencement
Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for a UK CCT in general radiology
The ability to run screening and symptomatic breast clinics and perform breast procedures independently
The ability to participate in breast MDTs and report breast MRI
Experience of digital breast tomosynthesis and contrast-enhanced mammography
Experience of, and commitment to, teaching and clinical audit

Desirable
Entry on the GMC Specialist Register, or a CESR or Portfolio Pathway application under consideration
One year's NHS experience at consultant level, substantive or locum
A minimum of one year's NHS experience in a breast unit at ST3 level or above
A higher degree relevant to the specialty
