GP - Bulk Billing | DPA | MM1 | West Melbourne VIC

GP-34
  • AUD $250,000 – $500,000 per year
  • Australia, Victoria
  • Permanent

A well-established not-for-profit community health service in Melbourne's western suburbs is looking to welcome a UK, Irish, or Canadian-trained GP to its team. This role offers something genuinely rare: the option of direct permanent residency sponsorship from day one (via a salaried 186 visa pathway), or a more traditional 482 visa with percentage-of-billings model. Both come with strong financial packages and a clinical environment that's substantively different from standard private practice — this is community health work, not private-billing volume.

Location & registration status

  • Suburb: West Melbourne VIC
  • DPA status: DPA-approved (Medicare provider number available from day one)
  • MMM classification: MM1

The clinic sits around 20km west of central Melbourne, with direct rail and motorway access into the CBD. The area is one of Melbourne's growing multicultural community hubs — affordable housing, strong public transport links, and a population mix that makes for genuinely varied clinical work. Melbourne itself consistently ranks among the world's most liveable cities, with excellent food, arts, and sport, and meaningfully lower property prices in the western suburbs than the inner east. The Werribee area, Geelong, and the Bellarine Peninsula are all within easy reach for weekends.

About the practice

The clinic is part of a not-for-profit community health service operating six locations across western Melbourne, with a clear mission around accessible primary care for communities that traditionally face barriers to healthcare. The GP team includes four established GPs (one with 20 years' tenure, two with 10–15 years) plus two registrars, supported by on-site nursing and a co-located pharmacist. Visiting specialists include an endocrinologist, pain specialist, paediatrician, and cardiologist — so referral pathways and continuity are unusually well-supported.

The clinical work is genuinely distinctive. The catchment includes:

  • The highest rate of diabetes in Victoria — strong scope for GPs interested in chronic disease management
  • A dedicated Refugee Health Programme serving a significant refugee and asylum seeker population
  • An on-site Sexual and Reproductive Health Hub
  • A high volume of skin procedures
  • A growing younger family demographic alongside the established elderly and chronic disease caseload

The service is currently undergoing facility modernisation, with new buildings expected within 12–18 months. Books are currently closed to new patients due to demand — meaning an incoming GP will have a full clinic from day one rather than building a base.

GPs choose 10 or 15-minute appointment lengths based on personal preference and clinical approach.

Package & earnings — two pathway options

This role offers two distinct contract structures, depending on what you're looking for:

Option A — 482 visa, percentage of billings (2-year contract):

  • 70/30 billing split in your favour (30% service fee)
  • 75/25 split for weekend shifts (3 hours)
  • AUD $170/hr income guarantee for the first 3 months
  • Up to AUD $20,000 relocation allowance
  • Pathway to PR after the 2-year contract

Option B — 186 visa, direct PR sponsorship from day one (salaried, 2-year minimum):

  • The practice sponsors permanent residency from day one via the 186 visa
  • Salaried employment model for a minimum of 2 years
  • 17% salary packaging available (significant tax-effective uplift in not-for-profit sector)
  • Some current GPs have chosen to remain on this model long-term beyond the initial 2 years
  • Full financial breakdown available on request

Both options are 2-year minimum commitments. The 186 PR pathway is genuinely unusual — most international GP roles in Australia offer 482 first with PR after 2 years, not PR sponsorship from day one.

Billing model

100% bulk billing, reflecting the not-for-profit community health service model.

Visa & AHPRA support

Full end-to-end support through AHPRA registration (Specialist or Expedited Specialist Pathway depending on your credentials), with both 482 and 186 visa pathways available depending on which contract structure you prefer. Our team will handle the heavy lifting on AHPRA paperwork, timelines, and ECFMG/EPIC verification where needed.

Who we're looking for

  • UK, Irish, or Canadian-trained GP with MRCGP or equivalent (we can advise on CCT timing if relevant)
  • Genuine interest in community health and population-level primary care — this is not a high-volume private billing role
  • Sub-specialty interest in dermatology or women's/sexual health particularly welcomed
  • Comfortable working with diverse patient populations including refugee and asylum seeker communities
  • Comfortable with a 2-year minimum commitment in exchange for the enhanced visa and financial structure
  • Open to relocating to Melbourne and embracing Victorian lifestyle

Next steps

Send your CV to aus@bdiresourcing.com or get in touch to schedule a call with our team — we'll talk through the role, both contract options, the AHPRA pathway, visa choices, and what life actually looks like once you're here.

Even if you're still a year or two away from relocating, it's worth an early conversation — the AHPRA and visa process takes time to do properly, and the choice between 482 and 186 PR sponsorship is worth thinking through carefully with someone who knows the trade-offs.
