GP - Private Billing | DPA | MM1 | Gillieston Heights, Hunter Valley NSW
- AUD $250,000 – $500,000 per year
- Australia, New South Wales
- Permanent
A privately-owned, growing GP group in the Hunter Valley region is looking to welcome up to four UK-trained GPs to its expanding site over the coming year. This is a high-earning, family-style private billing practice with strong patient demand, genuine mentorship from the owner (an established skin cancer GP), and a culture that has retained multiple registrars-turned-fellows long-term. Ambitious UK GPs wanting procedural exposure, private-billing earnings, and a clear development pathway should look closely.
Location & registration status
- Suburb: Hunter Valley NSW
- DPA status: DPA-approved (Medicare provider number available from day one)
- MMM classification: MM1
The location sits in the lower Hunter Valley, around 30 minutes west of central Newcastle and within easy reach of the Hunter wine region. The area is one of NSW's fastest-growing residential corridors — significant new housing development, an influx of young families and professionals relocating from Sydney for affordability and lifestyle, and a stable, family-oriented community demographic. Newcastle itself is one of Australia's more underrated coastal cities — world-class beaches, working harbour, strong schools, growing food and arts scene, and property prices substantially lower than Sydney. Sydney is around 2 hours south for occasional city access, and the Hunter Valley wine region is on your doorstep for weekends.
About the practice
The clinic is part of a small, independently-owned GP group operating three sites across the Newcastle/Hunter corridor. The practice is deliberately not corporate — independent ownership, family-style culture, and a stated focus on long-term GP retention, training, and mentorship. The Gillieston Heights site is a modern facility with on-site pathology, allied health (including podiatry), and a strong skin cancer clinic offering.
A key differentiator: the practice owner is an experienced skin cancer GP with advanced surgical skills, and offers genuine mentorship for GPs wanting to develop skin medicine and procedural work from beginner level upwards. The clinical team also includes GPs with dual qualifications in paediatrics, experienced women's health colleagues, and senior support for chronic disease and emergency-style presentations.
The practice has a strong track record of retaining registrars long-term as fellowed GPs — multiple current senior GPs trained internally and stayed. This is the kind of retention metric that's hard to fake and reflects a genuinely supportive culture: regular team support including engagement of psychologists for staff wellbeing and team communication.
Patient demand is strong and growing — existing GPs are booked weeks ahead, and the suburb itself is in rapid residential expansion. The practice is already approved for international sponsorship and is ready to support UK-trained GPs through visa and registration.
Package & earnings
- 70/30 billing split in your favour (with potential for higher percentages and long-term equity discussions for high-performing GPs)
- Income guarantee available during initial patient build-up — negotiable per candidate based on experience and circumstances
- Strong, realistic earnings potential— the practice has shared concrete current GP billing data:
- Newly qualified GPs typically reach AUD $250,000+ in their first 6 months
- AUD $500,000+ annually achievable for established GPs
- High-performing GPs billing AUD $3,000–$5,000+ per day
- Performance expectation: the practice expects established GPs to be billing at or above AUD $550,000 annually
- Strong nursing utilisation handles care plans, vaccinations, chronic disease support and procedure assistance — maximising GP clinical time and earnings
- Full-time or part-time considered
Billing model
Private billing — supporting longer, more thorough consultations and stronger per-patient earnings than bulk-billing comparators.
Visa & AHPRA support
Full end-to-end support through AHPRA registration (Specialist or Expedited Specialist Pathway depending on your credentials) and 482 visa sponsorship — the practice already holds sponsorship approval and has direct experience supporting international doctors. A clear pathway to permanent residency is in place. Our team will handle the heavy lifting on AHPRA paperwork, visa timelines, and ECFMG/EPIC verification where needed.
The practice also routinely supports overseas GPs with practical relocation logistics — housing searches, real estate connections, video property inspections, initial accommodation support, and referrals for accountants and ABN setup.

Even if you're still a year or two away from relocating, it's worth an early conversation — the AHPRA and visa process takes time to do properly, and ambitious roles like this one reward candidates who plan their move carefully.
