GP-48
  • AUD $250,000 – $500,000 per year
  • Australia, Tasmania
  • Permanent

Founded in 1895 — yes, 130 years ago — this independently-owned family practice in the heart of Launceston has built a reputation for clinical excellence across multiple generations of Tasmanian patients. The practice is currently looking to welcome a UK-trained GP to its team, with a particularly strong clinical opportunity for any GP with skin cancer interest, with the imminent departure of the practice's long-standing skin cancer specialist.

Location & registration status

  • Suburb: Launceston, Tasmania
  • DPA status: DPA-approved (Medicare provider number available from day one)
  • MMM classification: MM2

Launceston is Tasmania's second-largest city, set in the Tamar Valley around 2 hours north of Hobart. It's one of Australia's more underrated relocation destinations for UK GPs: a heritage city centre, the celebrated Tamar Valley cool-climate wine region on the doorstep, clean and quiet beaches within an hour, and a moderate climate that feels closer to the UK than anywhere else in Australia. The cost of living is meaningfully lower than the mainland capitals, schools are strong, and the lifestyle is genuinely family-friendly. Hobart, Cradle Mountain, and the Tasmanian east coast are all within easy weekend reach.

About the practice

This is a doctor-owned, family-run practice that has been operating in central Launceston since 1895 — making it one of the oldest continuously-running general practices in Tasmania. The team includes six GPs across a genuinely international and experienced profile, including:

  • A UK MRCGP doctor (Aberdeen graduate) with 23 years of UK general practice partnership experience before relocating
  • A FRACGP holder serving as a current RACGP examiner
  • Multiple internationally-trained colleagues at different stages of their RACGP fellowship journey

For UK GPs evaluating Australia, the institutional knowledge here is unusual: at least one colleague has lived the exact transition you're considering and the team understands the realities on both sides.

The practice is AGPAL accredited and is an accredited training practice for qualified doctors — meaningful quality markers. Clinical infrastructure includes practice nurses delivering ECGs, 24-hour blood pressure and ECG monitoring, spirometry, wound care, home visits, and infection control oversight — meaning GPs aren't pulled into these tasks themselves. Some practitioners are also using AI clinical scribe technology during consultations, reducing administrative burden during the clinical day.

After-hours care is fully covered by the Hello Home Doctor service — meaning no on-call burden on the practice's own GPs, and clinic hours are simply Monday to Friday 8am–6pm with no weekend work.

A genuine clinical opportunity in skin cancer medicine. The practice runs a dedicated, well-established skin cancer services with full procedural infrastructure, an established fee schedule, and an existing patient referral pathway. The current skin cancer specialist is transitioning elsewhere after a decade in the role, and the practice is actively looking for a successor. The clinic infrastructure (procedure rooms, dermoscopic equipment, patient flow, billing structure) is fully in place — a successor walks into a turnkey skin cancer operation rather than building one from scratch. For a UK GP with skin medicine interest or qualifications, this is a rare ready-made opportunity.

A note for incoming UK GPs: some of the staff including the practice owner have family roots in the UK — there's a genuine cultural familiarity in the leadership team that often makes the transition smoother for UK arrivals.

Package & earnings

  • 70/30 billing split in your favour (30% service fee)
  • AUD $150/hr income guarantee for the first 3 months OR 70% of receipted billings — whichever is higher
  • Relocation support tailored to candidate — a possibility of some rental assistance alongside a cash installment.
  • Predominantly private billing model (see below) supports strong per-consult earnings — standard consult fee AUD $100, long consult AUD $198
  • 10-minute appointments for established GPs / 20-minute appointments for GPs settling in — at the discretion of each individual GP
  • No weekend work
  • No on-call burden (after-hours covered by Hello Home Doctor service)
  • Full-time or part-time considered

Billing model

Mixed billing with a private-fee weighting — the practice is, as a rule, not a bulk-billing surgery. Bulk billing applies for patients under 12 and over 75 (consultations only), with private fees for the remaining patient base. The model supports stronger per-consult earnings than fully bulk-billing competitors.

Visa & AHPRA support

Full end-to-end support through AHPRA registration (Specialist or Expedited Specialist Pathway depending on your credentials) and 482 visa sponsorship, with a clear pathway to permanent residency eligible to apply after 2 years on the 482 visa. The practice has an immigration agent already in place and direct, current operational experience supporting internationally-trained doctors at different stages of the AHPRA and fellowship journey.

Our team will handle the heavy lifting on AHPRA paperwork, ESP timelines, and ECFMG/EPIC verification where needed, working alongside a practice with both the cultural familiarity and the operational support infrastructure to make the UK-to-Tasmania move work well.

Who we're looking for

  • UK-trained GP with MRCGP (or working toward CCT — we can advise on timing)
  • Skin cancer interest, experience, or qualifications particularly welcomed — there's a ready-made clinical operation waiting for a successor
  • Interest in long-term, relationship-based family medicine — the patient base is settled and continuity-driven
  • Comfortable in an independent, family-run practice rather than a corporate group
  • Open to relocating to Tasmania and embracing Launceston's lifestyle — wineries, beaches, moderate climate, and one of Australia's most genuinely liveable smaller cities

Next steps

Send your CV to aus@bdiresourcing.com or get in touch to schedule a call with our team — we'll talk through the role, the AHPRA pathway, visa options, and what life actually looks like once you're here.

Even if you're still a year or two away from relocating, it's worth an early conversation — the AHPRA and visa process takes time to do properly.
