Specialty Doctor in Emergency Medicine

The trust is recruiting successful candidates to join their multi-site acute and community Trust in the Southeast of England. We are looking for candidates able to work at Registrar level in the Emergency Medicine Department, and capable of working together with the other Registrar’s to run the shopfloor. You will be expected to lead the department on shift including night shifts whilst supervising your junior colleagues and helping the department run to maximum efficiency.

Duties and Responsibilities

A job plan will be provided before joining the department and this will be reviewed annually. The duties and responsibilities include:

• You will be expected to receive, examine, investigate, treat and refer appropriately patients of all descriptions arriving at the Emergency Department. You will have the duty to seek help from more senior colleagues when you are uncertain of how to manage any particular patient.
• You must have a thorough up-to-date knowledge of resuscitation techniques and take a major role in the employment of these in the resuscitation of critically ill and injured patients brought into the department.
• You will be expected and encouraged to update your knowledge and skills by attending appropriate courses/meetings. Appraisals will be used to monitor progress throughout the post and to identify future training needs. You are to participate and lead in Middle Grade teaching/simulation both on the shop-floor and scheduled sessions.
• It must be ensured that all relevant documentation is completed for each patient seen , including the required data input for the departmental computer systems and the generation of a GP letter.
• It will be expected of you to provide clinical advice and supports to ACCS, FY2 and GP trainees, and Emergency Nurse Practitioners including initial management of all categories of illness and injury presenting to the department and will be expected to undertake a liaison role with the General Practitioners as required facilitating best patient care.
• You will be expected to improve the standards of clinical care through Clinical Governance in order to ensure the best quality service is offered to both patients and colleagues.
• You will be expected to perform at least one clinical audit/Quality Improvement Project annually, with the advice and support of quality lead and senior staff.

The Hospital and the Emergency Department

The hospital department, which has been rated “Good” by the CQC, sees approximately 75,000 attendances a year, including 18,200 ambulance arrivals. The department has a dedicated paediatric assessment area sees approximately 20,000 attendances per annum and is staffed with specialist paediatric nurses 24/7. The night shifts are covered by two Middle Grade doctors and two Senior House Officers. The department has CESR program which includes regular teaching and rotations to ITU and Anaesthesia. The hospital serves a population of more than 336,000 and has a tertiary cancer centre as well as offering state of the art diagnostic and treatment services.

Location

It is in the Southeast of England in a location that is well connected to London, major towns and villages thanks to a significant road network. The area has vibrant market towns will provide you with numerous options from Michelin starred restaurants to independent pubs and cafes. There is a large selection of shops available and has some of the best schools/universities throughout the country. The location is known for its beautiful greenery and is known for its large parks that are perfect for those that enjoy to hike. The community is rich and diverse, as it has a large population of international medical graduates.

Requirements

• ATLS
• APLS
• ALS
• MRCEM
• Evidence of achievement of foundation competencies from a UKFPO – affiliated foundation programme or equivalent, in line with GMC standards / Good Medical Practise
• Minimum of 4 years’ post-graduate experience in Emergency Medicine or equivalent specialty.
