Contract: 12 months (with a view to extend permanently)

The Department

The department have 19 theatres across their two sites and provide approximately 18,000 anaesthetics a year, 75% being day surgery anaesthesia. The anaesthetics team work symbiotically with the Critical Care team, a combined unit with 15 beds offering flexible Level 2 and 3 care. The Department provides anaesthesia services for a wide range of surgical specialties including Trauma and Elective Orthopaedics General, Bariatric, Gynaecological and Urology, Adult and Paediatric ENT and Max Fax, and Ophthalmic Surgery.

They pride themselves on providing a well-established preassessment service and maintaining 9 ICU beds to support their expanding range of services. The anaesthetic department places a strong emphasis on education and research, conducting simulation training across the trust. Regular departmental monthly audit/educational half days are scheduled, free from clinical commitments.

Main Duties 

This post offers a flexible job plan that can be tailored to meet the specific needs of both the department and the individual. It is a 12 Programmed Activity (PA) position, where the successful candidate will have the opportunity to run lists independently, while occasionally collaborating with consultants or trainee doctors. They value the special interests of their staff and will endeavour to accommodate them whenever possible.

To support continuous professional development (CPD), appraisal, and revalidation, there is a 1 PA allocation for Supporting Professional Activities (SPA). Additionally, mandatory training completion is accounted for within this time. Candidates who take on additional responsibilities can negotiate for further SPA time.

Upon successful appointment, they will work closely with you to shape the ideal job plan, and after three months and annually thereafter, they will conduct reviews to ensure the plan remains a perfect fit for you. As you take on your role, you can rest assured that they will provide the necessary resources and administrative support to assist you in your duties.

This post entails full-shift on-call duties, ranging from 1 in 7 to 1 in 8. On-call responsibilities include coverage encompassing critical care, obstetrics, or emergency theatre cases, based on mutual agreement.

As a post holder, you may have opportunities to engage in teaching and instructing doctors, medical students, nurses, and other paramedical staff within the team.

Training:

They’re passionate about teaching, so you’ll have the option to play your part in teaching the next generation of doctors, nurses and other clinical staff. We will also give you the opportunity to make sure you keep up-to-date on educational development.

Requirements

In order to apply for this role you will need:

  • Full GMC Registration (or you have been invited to the ID check stage) 
  • Recognised post graduate degree (e.g. EDAIC, EDIC, MRCP, FRCA, USMLE)
  • English Language Test (OET or IELTS)
  • EPIC verification (via the ECFMG) of your primary and post-graduate medical qualifications
  • Experience in a similar position overseas or locally (Specialty Doctor/Specialist/Senior Resident)
