An NHS Trust in the South East of the UK has exciting, newly created posts which will provide support to Oncology care in outpatient clinics and acute oncology ward rounds. 
 
 You’ll be allocated a Consultant mentor who will ensure you maintain and develop clinical skills and identify individual areas for training and development. There will also be group teaching and practice sessions in order to develop specialist training and skills. There will be the opportunity to cover a wide variety of tumour sites, which will contribute towards the CESR portfolio.

The Oncology department prides itself on the level of support it can provide to CESR aspirants, with opportunity to gain radiotherapy exposure at a neighbouring University Trust.

The Job

It’s a 10PA job plan (40 hours per week) with no on-call commitments. The post holder will ideally specialise in breast, lung and Gynae malignancies however there is flexibility for the successful appointees to choose UGI, Urology or LGI. Each 3-hour clinic has 1 new and 6 follow up patients. The post holder is likely to see 150-180 new patients per annum. 
 
Whilst the job plan will be agreed on formal acceptance of the role, the general rota will consist of 34 hours (8.5 PAs) DCC and 6 hours (1.5 PAs) SPA.
 
 The role involves:

  • Working as part of multidisciplinary team
  • Supporting consultant led outpatient clinics and assessing patients having outpatient chemotherapy
  • Attending relevant multidisciplinary team meetings
  • Participating in the Acute Oncology Service
  • Covering chemotherapy unit
  • Undertaking continuing medical education facilitated by funded study leave (MRCP or FRCR, for example)
  • Participating in clinical audit
  • Undertaking administrative duties for patient care
  • Teaching and training junior colleagues
  • Partaking in research and supporting clinical trials

The Department

The Oncology Unit provides a comprehensive service of tumour specific outpatient clinics lead by consultants and supported by tumour specific CNSs, tumour specific multidisciplinary team meetings, systemic anti-cancer treatment and blood product delivery and other complementary and supportive services.

Outpatient clinics and Systemic anti-cancer treatments are delivered across the two main Hospital sites at the Trust.

Continuing Professional Development

The individual in this position is anticipated to engage in outpatient clinics, MDT meetings, and contribute to the Acute Oncology Service by participating in AOS ward rounds.

There will be chances to engage in teaching medical students and supervising junior doctors.

Furthermore, the post-holder will be encouraged to take part in clinical audit and other clinical governance responsibilities, such as morbidity and mortality meetings where the organization and presentation of data would be beneficial. Additionally, involvement in research, quality improvement, and service evaluation projects is expected.

Requirements

  • GMC Registration with License to Practice (essential)
  • Minimum 3 years specialty specific experience in Oncology (essential)
  • PLAB, MRCP, FRCR or equivalent postgraduate qualification (desirable)
