This Trust is recruiting for Specialty Doctors in Emergency Medicine to support the development, strategy and delivery of excellent emergency clinical care in Yorkshire. The successful candidates are expected to work effectively alongside other Specialty Doctors and Specialist Registrar colleagues, that deliver direct clinical care on a 24/7 basis, with full internal cover for annual leave, study leave, Public and Bank Holidays. This is a senior position within the emergency department and the successful applicant will be expected to have the skills required to take responsibility as the most senior resident doctor when the Emergency Medicine Consultant is non-resident and on call for emergencies. The rota complies with current national guidance and Specialty Doctors are contracted for 10 programmed activities per week:

9 PA – for direct clinical care

1 SPA – for personal development

Additional Pas and SPAs are negotiable pending discussion.

Duties and Responsibilities

There will be a job plan that is provided before you join the department that will also be reviewed annually. The duties and responsibilities include:

  • Providing excellent direct clinical care to patients presenting to the ED
  • Be responsible for the initial assessment, management and discharge or referral of patients to specialist teams.
  • Be in cooperation with more experienced colleagues to fully participate in the delivery of an emergency service after hours. It is anticipated that post holders will acquire the necessary skills during the placement, even though they might not have the starting capabilities to manage independently.
  • Be able to refer patients to different specialities depending on the case on hand.
  • Active participation in audit and clinical governance, including service improvement initiatives.
  • Participation in specialty and cross-specialty multidisciplinary teams and meetings.
  • Participation in important administrative tasks
  • Instruction and supervision of junior medical staff and other clinicians as needed.

The Hospital and the Emergency department:

Our two Emergency Departments (EDs) are located mainly over two hospitals. There is also an urgent treatment centre in a separate hospital. We may need every member of our medical staff to provide care to patients at all three locations. Clinically speaking, these positions will take part in the cross-site Tier 2 rota that facilitates the provision of round-the-clock emergency medicine coverage. It will be required of the 9 DCC PA to work all shift patterns, including regular days, twilights, and nights.

The two hospitals host Emergency Departments (ED) and offer a wide range of medical specialties, including surgery, orthopaedics, oncology, maternal care and paediatrics. The hospitals are equipped with advanced facilities and a skilled medical team, providing high-quality care to patients across the region. The Urgent Treatment Centre provides urgent care services to residents in nearby areas. While not a full hospital, it offers prompt medical attention for non-life-threatening conditions. Staffed with experienced healthcare professionals, the centre ensures patients receive timely care closer to home.
