NHS Locum Consultant in Haematology

A large University Teaching Hospital in a very popular location in the Southeast are looking to appoint a fixed term 12-month post for an NHS Locum Consultant with interest in General Haematology, SIHMDS and red cell disorders to support their well-established multidisciplinary team. This is a permanent 10 PA (40 hours p/w) contract with rostered on-call commitments, working alongside the other Haematologists to deliver specialist BCSH Level 3 Haematology care to the surrounding population in inpatient and outpatient care of patients with red cell disorders. Alongside this, you will also assist with postgraduate teaching, as well as involving yourself in relevant MDTs and clinical trials. The expectation is that you will join the SIHMDS consultant team, assisting with providing laboratory diagnostic services twice a week. Additionally, you will be expected to support research in general haematology, diagnostics and red cell disorders and have interest in developing your own sub-specialty interests. Supervision of Specialist Trainees is an important part of your role in conjunction with representing the department on various committees within the trust while taking the responsibility for certain delegated areas according to departmental requirements. In this role, you will be expected to undertake non-emergency work on premium time and the attendance to clinical haematology governance meetings and senior staff meetings

Clinical Haematology 

This renowned regional teaching hospital has provided a comprehensive care for all haematological disorders, both malignant and non-malignant for an approximate population of 780,000 and is one of the most complex NHS trusts in the UK. The Haematology inpatient unit provides an academically led acute and specialist services to its local population and facilitates the diagnosis and treatment of complex illnesses as well as specialising in the treatment of cancer, cardiac, infection, neurological, gastrointestinal, oral disease and women’s health.

The department offer clinical and research programmes in the following: lymphoma, leukaemia, myeloma, transplant, immunotherapy, coagulation, TTP, blood transfusion and red cell disorders. Additionally, there is a cellular therapy unit that assists with providing the facilities to support the departments stem cell harvests, gene therapy and immunotherapy with an extensive apheresis unit that performs both therapeutic and harvesting procedures.

General Haematology/SIHMDS

The Haematology department are very active with providing support to local GPs in addition to other specialties within the trust. This guidance is currently directed by laboratory ST3+ in conjunction with the relevant SIHMDS consultant in a rota system. The consultations for patients are managed by the relevant inpatient ST3+ and generally overseen by the myeloma attending consultant.

Two outpatient diagnostic clinics per week give opportunity to see a broad range of haematology issues. These clinics are dedicated to prompt diagnosis with patients being returned to primary care for ongoing follow ups or referrals to appropriate specialty clinics, including lymphoma, myeloma, leukaemia and MPN. This presents an exciting growth prospect at for the trust, offering the postholder a valuable chance to actively contribute to shaping the future of the service. The role involves transforming and enhancing patient pathways, presenting a great opportunity for the individual. They are seeking a proactive individual with strong leadership skills, capable of spearheading initiatives like streamlined testing processes, our advisory service, collaboration with primary care, and leveraging data analytics to enhance our service offerings.

The Specialist Integrated Haematology and Molecular Diagnostic Service (SIHMDS) is housed within the High Specialized Laboratory (HSL), situated in the state-of-the-art facility. This service offers advanced diagnostic capabilities not only for the Trust but also for a diverse network of partner hospitals. Additionally, it boasts an extensive educational program tailored for haematology trainees, ensuring their proficiency in the field.

Red Cell Team  

The haemoglobinopathy service department plays a crucial role as one of the national Haemoglobinopathy Coordinating Centres (HCC). It serves as a leading HCC for thalassaemia and rare inherited anaemia, as well as one of the ten HCCs for sickle cell disorder. Collaboratively, the HCC works closely with partnership hospitals to ensure comprehensive care for patients. Notably, there is a strong research program in Red Cell Disorders at the trust that supports these efforts.

The service is backed by a dedicated team of hospital and community-based clinical psychologists, as well as the community service operating from local Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia centre. Regular HCC network multidisciplinary team meetings and gatherings involve all relevant healthcare providers, ensuring coordinated and effective care.

Patients benefit from specialized psychological support services integrated within the multidisciplinary team. Additionally, they have access to the wide range of services provided by the Macmillan Support and Information Service. The department maintains connections with Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Counselling services throughout the country, further enhancing the support available to patients.

The trust has a dedicated team for haemoglobinopathy care, including a HCC matron (0.2WTE) providing CNS leadership. Additionally, there are two adult CNS (WTE) and one paediatric CNS (0.5WTE), along with a nursing apheresis lead and a data manager. The Specialist Haemoglobinopathy Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meets weekly, while a network MDT takes place monthly via teleconferencing.

Research in red cell disorders and transfusion is actively pursued, encompassing clinical trials, laboratory investigations, artificial intelligence, and genomics. Collaborations with the Clinical Research Informatics Unit, part of the Institute of Health Informatics, further strengthen research capabilities. The department also holds a sub-theme leadership position in the new non-malignant haematology theme.

• Specialty specific experience in Haematology – Essential
• Specialty specific post graduate qualification in Haematology – Essential
• MRCP or FRCpath
