A Midlands-based district general hospital is actively seeking to hire a Consultant in Chronic Pain Management, offering a full-time position with 10 PAs, including 1.5 SPA. The incoming consultant will collaborate with existing consultants in managing caseloads, utilizing facilities, and supporting trainee grades. This presents an exciting chance to join an expanding Chronic Pain department, where responsibilities include Anaesthesia for adult patients in specialized fields aligned with your interests and CPD needs.

The Department

At the Trust, three Consultant Anaesthetists collaborate as part of a multidisciplinary team including psychology and physiotherapy to deliver Chronic Pain services across the Trust. Out-patient clinics operate at all sites, while procedures primarily take place at the secondary site, serving as day patients. Recent advancements involve the establishment of a multi-disciplinary one-stop clinic there also.

The Trust has opened a full-time position for a Consultant in Anaesthesia and Chronic Pain. The successful candidate will be required to divide their sessions equally between Chronic Pain and Anaesthetics. The institution seeks a well-balanced pain consultant who will function within the MDT team, overseeing Pain clinics and theatres at various sites. Flexibility is essential as the role involves covering joint MDT clinics alongside a psychologist as necessitated by the service.

Responsibilities include covering Anaesthetic theatre sessions for common surgical specialties found in district general hospitals. The candidate should adapt their schedule to meet the service needs of Anaesthesia and Pain management. Additionally, active participation in departmental activities, trust teaching, and involvement in clinical governance and audit initiatives is expected.

Main Duties of the Post

The allocation of theatre duties is subject to discussion and agreement with the successful candidate. This schedule might undergo future adjustments due to evolving service requirements. Any potential changes will be mutually deliberated upon and agreed upon during the annual job plan meeting.

Certain positions may involve Flexible Sessions, requiring post holders to cover sessions within their expertise. These sessions enhance flexibility in Consultant work, allowing individuals to maintain skills across a broader spectrum of sub-specialties compared to a fixed job plan. This includes participating in Paediatric anaesthesia sessions to facilitate inclusion in the general on-call schedule.

Out-of-hours responsibilities involve a 1 in 12 on-call rotation (weekdays only) for anaesthesia, encompassing general, paediatric, and obstetric cases. Additionally, there exists a separate on-call roster for the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Nominal coverage for inpatients is provided. While Resident Medical Officer (RMO) coverage operates around the clock at the SACH site, ICU/General consultants handle on-call duties during out-of-hours (9PM-8AM).

The Trust has allotted 1.5 Programmed Activities (PA) for supporting professional activities (SPA) to all consultants. Consultants might have the opportunity to undertake additional SPA allocation if they can demonstrate supplementary SPA-related activities during job plan discussions.

Requirements

In order to apply for this role, you will need:

  • GMC Registration complete (or awaiting ID check)
  • Recognized post graduate degree (EDAIC, EDIC, MRCP, FRCA, USMLE)
  • Language test (OET or IELTS)
  • ECFMG verification
  • Experience in a similar position overseas or locally (Consultant/Locum Consultant)
  • Subspecialty training experience, fellowship or qualification specific to chronic pain
  • Preferably having experience in the NHS
