We are working with an enthusiastic oncology department in Scotland that is seeking a Consultant Clinical Oncologist. Role and Responsibilities

This full-time position consists of 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), including time allocated for direct clinical care, radiotherapy planning, outpatient clinics, and multidisciplinary team involvement. There is a 1:9 non-resident on-call rota, with compensatory rest time provided following any overnight duties.

The successful candidate will focus primarily on the treatment of breast and/or lung cancer patients, with responsibilities including:

  • Management of outpatient clinics and delivery of systemic anti-cancer therapies (SACT)
  • Radiotherapy planning and treatment supervision
  • Participation in multidisciplinary team meetings for both breast and lung cancer sites
  • Close collaboration with surgical and medical teams across various hospital sites
  • Involvement in teaching and supervision of medical trainees and students
  • Participation in service development and clinical governance activities
  • Contribution to clinical trials and research, with support from a dedicated research team

Flexibility exists in the job plan, and candidates with other site interests may be accommodated based on the department’s needs.

The Hospital

The oncology unit is part of a larger acute hospital serving a broad geographic area across the Highlands and Islands. The hospital offers modern facilities, including a cancer treatment centre with two linear accelerators (Varian TrueBeam), facilities for SABR (Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy), and image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT). Brachytherapy and electron treatments are also supported on site.

The department operates a well-coordinated systemic therapy service, with chemotherapy administered by a specialist nursing team. Treatment is offered both centrally and via outreach clinics. The team includes Clinical and Medical Oncologists, specialist nurses, radiographers, and pharmacists, supported by robust administrative and clinical governance structures.

Academic links with a local university and participation in national research networks offer excellent opportunities for clinical research and teaching involvement.

The hospital is located in a vibrant town in Northern Scotland, offering the rare combination of urban convenience and natural beauty. With a population of around 50,000, the area provides excellent local amenities including shops, schools, cafes, and cultural attractions, while being surrounded by stunning countryside and coastal scenery.

The Requirements

Essential Criteria:

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR) or equivalent qualification
  • Completion (or near completion) of specialist training in Clinical Oncology
  • Experience in managing breast and/or lung malignancies
  • Excellent communication and team-working skills
  • Evidence of commitment to patient safety and quality improvement

Desirable Criteria:

  • Previous experience working in the NHS
  • Experience in leading or participating in clinical research
  • Involvement in medical education or teaching programmes
  • Familiarity with working in rural or remote healthcare settings
