We are delighted to invite applications for a Specialty Doctor in Microbiology at a leading NHS teaching hospital in the North East of England. This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced microbiologist seeking a supportive environment with structured career progression - including full CESR support and a clear pathway to Consultant-level posts.

The department is well-established, highly collaborative, and integrated into an acute tertiary care trust. You will join a dynamic and friendly team of Consultant Microbiologists, Infection Control Practitioners, Biomedical Scientists, and ID colleagues, all working closely together to deliver a high-quality infection service.


The Department

The microbiology department is part of a large and forward-thinking tertiary hospital trust with a strong emphasis on education, training, and innovation. The lab is fully UKAS-accredited, well-resourced, and part of an integrated infection service including ID, virology, and IPC.

The hospital is based in a vibrant town in the North East of England, offering a great balance between urban living and access to stunning natural surroundings. Key Responsibilities

  • Provide clinical microbiology services including diagnostic interpretation, antimicrobial stewardship advice, and infection control support
  • Participate in multidisciplinary ward rounds, laboratory liaison, and clinical meetings
  • Support infection prevention and control programmes across the trust
  • Participate in the on-call rota (non-resident)
  • Contribute to teaching and supervision of junior doctors, trainees, and laboratory staff
  • Engage with audit, research, and quality improvement initiatives
  • Participate in departmental meetings and policy development
  • Contribute to service development and strategic planning as part of the clinical team

Essential Requirements

  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • FRCPath Part 1 in Medical Microbiology
  • Completed postgraduate training in Microbiology (e.g. MD or equivalent) from overseas
  • Minimum 4 years post-graduate medical experience, including significant time in clinical microbiology
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work within a multidisciplinary team
  • Commitment to professional development and progression through CESR

 

Desirable Requirements

  • FRCPath Part 2 (or in preparation)
  • Participation in infection prevention and control programmes
  • Evidence of teaching, quality improvement, or research activity
