An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Specialty Doctor in Adult Inpatient Psychiatry to join a progressive NHS Trust in the East of England. This role is based within a short-stay Mental Health Assessment Unit (MHAU), designed to provide rapid psychiatric assessment and safe redirection of patients.

You will play a key role in delivering high-quality inpatient psychiatric care as part of a skilled and supportive multidisciplinary team, with protected time for professional development, teaching, and audit.

Main Duties

• Ward/Service Base: Inpatient care within a dedicated Mental Health Assessment Unit, typically for short stays of up to 7 days.
• Patient Profile: Adults requiring urgent psychiatric assessment; most admitted voluntarily, with some under the Mental Health Act. Wide range of mental health presentations.
• Team Structure: Supported by multiple Consultants, a Specialty Doctor, junior trainees (FY, CT, GP), and a full MDT including nurses, psychologists, OTs, peer support workers, and family ambassadors.
On-call Rota: There is no on-call commitment required for this post.
Non-Clinical Time: Yes – opportunities include:

  • Teaching and supervision of medical trainees
  • Participation in audit and CPD (with study leave entitlement)
  • Contribution to research and quality improvement

Requirements

To apply for this position, you will need:
 • Full GMC registration with licence to practise
 • Minimum 4 years’ full-time postgraduate training (including at least 2 years in psychiatry)
 • MRCPsych desirable but not essential
 • Section 12/Approved Clinician status desirable (or willingness to obtain)
 • Experience in general adult psychiatry and inpatient care
 • Commitment to audit, CPD, and teaching
