Location – Scotland
Duration – Fixed-term, Full Time (10 PAs)
Join a forward‑thinking Emergency Medicine team during an exciting period of service transformation.
You will become an integral member of a unified Emergency Medicine workforce serving a population of approximately 370,000. Our two-site model offers a dynamic clinical environment, robust career development, and the chance to shape the future of urgent and unscheduled care.
Main Duties:
• What areas will you cover? Work across both Emergency Departments (including Resus, Majors, Paediatric bays, and Minor Injuries units), plus shared observation wards and weekly trauma clinics.
• What kind of patients? A mixed adult and paediatric caseload, from minor injuries to major trauma, under the direction of Consultant colleagues and aligned with the National Trauma Network.
• Who’s on the team? You’ll join a multidisciplinary team comprising Emergency Medicine Consultants, Specialty Doctors, Higher Specialty Trainees, FY2s, Clinical Development & Teaching Fellows, ACPs, ANPs, ENPs, and dedicated nursing and operational support.
• What is the on‑call rota? Self‑rostering shift pattern including days, evenings, nights and weekend commitments; departmental leadership overnight with Consultant on‑call from home.
• Time for non‑clinical work? Yes—2 SPA sessions are ring‑fenced weekly for QI projects, audit, teaching (UG & PG programmes including ATLS/APLS/ALS/POCUS), research development and other departmental roles.
The Department & Facilities:
• ED Activity: Site A sees ~75,000 new attendances p.a. (25% paediatric); Site B ~40,000 (13% paediatric).
• Trauma & Critical Care: Site A is the designated Trauma Unit with a 6‑bedded ITU; Site B has a 3‑bedded ITU. Both have on‑site stroke, cardiac, surgical and paediatric services.
• ED Footprint: Resuscitation bays, monitored majors, dedicated paediatric areas, suture rooms, psychiatry rooms, and Nurse Practitioner‑led minor injuries units. Each runs adult and paediatric trauma clinics and an ED observation ward.
• Future Plans: Further integration across sites, expansion of telemedicine links, consolidation of Advanced Practice roles, and close collaboration with pre‑hospital services.
The Region:
• A beautiful coastal and island locale with world‑class outdoor pursuits—hiking, water sports and more—yet within easy reach of a major city’s cultural, shopping and transport hubs.
• Excellent local schools and family‑friendly communities.
• Affordable housing and living costs compared to urban centres.
• Strong rail and road links to national airports and neighbouring regions.
Requirements:
To apply for this position, you will need:
• Full GMC registration with Licence to Practise
• A minimum of four years’ postgraduate training, including at least 12 months in Emergency Medicine within the NHS
• Completion of basic competencies in Anaesthetics, Acute Medicine and Intensive Care Medicine; paediatric EM experience desirable
• ALS, ATLS and APLS provider status (or willingness to complete promptly)
• Proven team‑working, communication and organisational skills
• Evidence of teaching, audit/QI involvement and an interest in research
• Desirable: FRCEM or equivalent, postgraduate qualifications in medical education, published research
