We are working with a well-established NHS Trust to recruit a Senior Clinical Fellow with a specialist interest in Glaucoma. This role offers an exciting opportunity to gain further subspecialty experience in a high-volume, high-acuity ophthalmology setting.

Role and Responsibilities

This is a full-time position comprising 10 Programmed Activities (PAs): Eight clinical sessions, one session for clinical administration and one session for research and professional development.

Each clinical session equates to four hours of direct patient care. Flexibility is essential, and the successful candidate will engage in a variety of glaucoma services, from routine management to complex surgical care.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Independent management of routine and complex glaucoma cases, including acute presentations.
  • Proficiency in glaucoma laser treatments such as SLT, YAG iridotomy and capsulotomy, and diode laser cyclo-ablation.
  • Performing routine cataract surgeries and managing glaucoma-related complex surgical cases (e.g. Trabeculectomy, Preserflo, Tube Surgery, MIGS).
  • Teaching medical students and junior doctors.
  • Participation in audits, clinical governance, and research initiatives aligned with the Trust’s academic partners.
  • Supporting service planning and development in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team.

You will be supervised by a team of experienced consultants across multiple sites and report directly to the Clinical Service Lead.

The Hospital

The Ophthalmology Department is one of the largest in the region, operating across four major hospital sites. The primary base for this role will be within a busy district general hospital that is part of a larger teaching Trust.

The department includes over 40 consultants and offers subspecialty services in Glaucoma, Cornea, Retina, Paediatric Ophthalmology, VR Surgery and General Ophthalmology. The glaucoma service in particular is expansive, seeing a wide range of cases and providing exposure to complex surgical procedures. Close collaboration with a leading regional eye centre further enhances training and development opportunities. The department also benefits from strong academic links with local universities, supporting both research and education.

The Location

This opportunity is based in a busy urban area within the West Midlands, known for its diverse population and vibrant community life. The region offers excellent transport links, including national rail, motorway connections and an international airport.

It’s a highly desirable location for professionals and families, offering a mix of city life and green spaces. The area boasts a range of cultural venues, shopping centres and some of the UK’s best-known schools and universities. With affordable housing and a strong sense of community, it’s an excellent choice for anyone relocating.
