This role provides an excellent opportunity for doctors with paediatric training and advanced neonatal skills to work at tier 2 (registrar) level within a busy tertiary neonatal unit. The post combines experience in neonatal intensive care, high dependency, special and transitional care, while offering structured education, audit and research opportunities. It is ideally suited for candidates aiming to consolidate neonatal registrar-level competencies in preparation for senior training.

Main Duties:  

  • Deliver tier 2-level care on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Special Care and Transitional Care Wards
  • Attend deliveries and lead neonatal resuscitation, supervising junior colleagues
  • Manage complex cases, including extremely preterm and ventilated infants, with consultant support
  • Contribute to neonatal transport through the regional SoNAR service
  • Participate in audit, quality improvement, and departmental guideline development
  • Engage in structured weekly teaching sessions, journal clubs and neonatal grand rounds
  • Full shift resident rota, 1 in 8 (including nights and weekends)

The Hospital:

  • The Neonatal Unit is one of the designated tertiary NICUs for the South West, with:
  • 14 intensive/high dependency cots, 8 special care and 18 transitional care cots
  • Approximately 4,000 inborn deliveries annually
  • Facilities including full ventilatory support, nitric oxide therapy, echocardiography, neuroimaging and therapeutic hypothermia
  • Multidisciplinary support from allied health professionals, psychology, pharmacy and paediatric radiology
  • Active involvement in national research trials and membership of the Vermont Oxford Network
  • Strong teaching ethos, hosting NLS and ARNI courses as well as ANNP and QIS training

Requirements:

To apply for this position, you will need the following:

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • GMC registration (or eligibility for registration)
  • MRCPCH Part 1 (essential), Part 2 (desirable)
  • At least 24 months paediatric training, including 12 months neonatal experience
  • Confidence in neonatal procedures such as umbilical line insertion and advanced airway management
  • Successful completion of NLS (essential), ARNI desirable
  • Evidence of teaching, audit or research activity
