- UK, South West
- Fixed
This is a fantastic opportunity for a motivated middle-grade doctor (ST4–ST8 equivalent) to gain experience in a busy Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The postholder will join a tertiary-level neonatal service, supporting the care of preterm and term infants with a wide range of medical needs.
The role provides valuable hands-on training in intensive care, high dependency, and special care, alongside structured educational opportunities equivalent to those offered to UK specialist registrars. This post is ideal for candidates seeking to consolidate neonatal skills prior to entering training, or for those looking to further develop their clinical practice in the UK.
Main Duties:
- Manage the care of preterm and term neonates across intensive care, high dependency, postnatal wards, and outpatient clinics.
- Provide continuity of care by rotating through clinical areas within a structured timetable.
- Supervise and support junior doctors and work closely with neonatal nurses and the wider MDT.
- Participate in emergency neonatal resuscitations, admissions, and ongoing management of complex cases.
- Take part in the middle-grade rota, which includes days, nights, weekends, and long shifts.
- Engage in departmental teaching, CPD, journal clubs, simulation training, and audit activities.
- Develop advanced technical skills such as intubation, central line insertion, head ultrasound, and neonatal resuscitation.
The Hospital:
You will be based at a large, modern teaching hospital with one of the busiest Neonatal Intensive Care Units in the South West. Key features include:
- Up to 32 neonatal cots, with capacity for 16 intensive care/high dependency cots.
- Approximately 650 admissions per year, including over 85 infants weighing under 1500g.
- Advanced neonatal therapies including high-frequency oscillation, nitric oxide therapy, and comprehensive monitoring facilities.
- Access to CT and MRI scanning, neurophysiological testing, and cerebral function monitoring.
- Strong clinical links with regional surgical and tertiary neonatal centres.
- An established teaching culture with undergraduate and postgraduate involvement.
The Location:
The hospital is based in the South West of England - a region known for its balance of vibrant city life and access to beautiful countryside and coastline. The area offers:
- Bustling city amenities including theatres, restaurants, and a thriving cultural scene.
- Excellent transport links with major motorways, rail stations, and international airports nearby.
- A range of housing options, from family-friendly suburbs to lively city neighbourhoods.
- Easy access to the coast, countryside, and national parks, providing opportunities for hiking, cycling, and water sports.
- Highly rated schools and universities, making it an ideal location for both individuals and families relocating.
- This is a location where you can pursue excellent career opportunities while enjoying a high quality of life outside of work.
Requirements:
To apply for this position, you will need the following:
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
- Full GMC registration.
- At least 6 years of postgraduate experience, including minimum 6 months neonatal experience at ST1–3 level in a tertiary centre.
- Minimum 12 months neonatal experience at middle-grade level (DGH and/or tertiary) within the NHS
