Senior Clinical Fellow in Anaesthetics

A rare opportunity to join an anaesthetic team with a brand-new elective orthopaedic centre with eight state-of-the-art theatres, a modern block room, and one of the most genuinely friendly, supportive anaesthetic teams in the region.
This post is ideal for motivated, broad-skilled anaesthetists who enjoy variety, pace, and working within a high-functioning DGH environment. It is not suited to those looking to wind down - the department wants fellows who bring energy, team spirit, and the drive to help push the service forward.
With protected non-clinical time, superb consultant support, and exposure to high-volume elective orthopaedics, this role is ideal for anyone building towards ST4 applications or developing a strong senior fellow portfolio.
Main Duties:
Theatre Work
- Provide anaesthesia for a wide range of elective orthopaedic surgery (primary and revision arthroplasty, upper limb, foot & ankle, ambulatory trauma).
- Work within enhanced recovery pathways and local protocols.
On-Call (1:8)
- Cover extended recovery and deteriorating patients.
- Manage vascular emergencies, major obstetrics, and paediatric patients from 1 year upwards.
- Support the Foundation Doctor across three elective surgical wards.
Additional Duties
- Teaching and supervising junior trainees and MDT members.
- Participate in simulation, departmental teaching, QI and governance.
- Undertake protected portfolio-building activity (Regional Anaesthesia, Education, Perioperative Medicine, or QI/Research).

The Wider Anaesthetic Department
Although your primary base is the orthopaedic centre, you’ll be part of a large, dynamic anaesthetic department covering:
- General surgery
- Obstetrics
- Vascular
- Trauma & orthopaedics
- Critical Care
- Emergency work
- Ambulatory surgery
- Regional anaesthesia programmes
- Simulation and medical education

ICU Services
The trust provides:
- A well-established Critical Care Unit offering Level 2 and Level 3 care
- Strong outreach services
- Close collaboration between anaesthesia, ICU, surgery and ED teams

- You will interact closely with ICU teams when escalating deteriorating patients from the elective site.

Requirements:
To apply for this position, you will need the following:
- Full GMC registration with licence to practise
- Some NHS Anaesthetics experience
- Solo anaesthetic capability for ASA 1-2 patients
- Competence managing PACU patients with distant supervision
- Confidence with paediatrics (1 year+), vascular emergencies and major obstetrics
- A proactive, friendly, team-focused mindset
- Primary FRCA desirable but not essential
