We are working with a leading NHS Trust in South East England to recruit a Senior Clinical Fellow in Adult Critical Care. This is a full-time position ideally suited to doctors with a background in critical care who are looking to enhance their experience within a well-supported, progressive environment. The role offers a structured CESR support pathway, an established educational programme, and the opportunity to work across multiple hospital sites within a large, well-integrated critical care network.

Role and Responsibilities

This is a 12-month fixed-term post with the potential to become permanent. You will be working within a well-established critical care division that spans three main hospitals. The role is focused entirely on adult general critical care-there are no commitments to anaesthesia, burns, or cardiothoracic critical care.

As a Senior Clinical Fellow, your clinical responsibilities will include:

  • Attending morning safety huddles and consultant-led ward rounds
  • Reviewing and managing critically ill patients under consultant supervision
  • Performing procedures such as central line insertion, emergency intubation, and ventilator configuration
  • Responding to emergency calls and facilitating patient transfers
  • Supervising junior doctors (FY2–ST2 level) and contributing to their development
  • Attending multidisciplinary team meetings and communicating with patients and their families on treatment plans, resuscitation, and end-of-life care

Additional non-clinical responsibilities include:

  • Participation in audit, clinical governance, and morbidity & mortality meetings
  • Involvement in quality improvement and service development projects
  • Engaging in teaching medical students, junior doctors, and allied health professionals
  • Access to regular educational sessions and a structured personal development plan

This role is particularly supportive of international doctors aiming for CESR. Tailored CESR guidance is offered, with flexibility in rota planning to accommodate training needs.

The Hospital

The Trust’s Critical Care Directorate operates across three major hospital sites with a total of 46 Level 3 beds (with flexible Level 2/3 use) and over 2,500 admissions annually. The units are led by experienced consultants and supported by robust nursing and operational teams.

Each unit offers distinct clinical exposure. The division is ambitious, with £10 million in recurrent funding already secured and future plans for capital investment and service expansion. The team fosters a strong culture of education, development, and innovation, supported by excellent IT infrastructure including a shared electronic patient record system.

The Location

The hospitals are located in South East England, offering a blend of urban and rural living. The area benefits from excellent transport connections including quick access to London, proximity to two international airports and efficient local public transport.

The region features a mix of cosmopolitan towns and peaceful countryside, affordable housing and top-performing grammar schools. There are plenty of coastal attractions and green spaces nearby, ideal for families and professionals seeking work-life balance.

The Requirements

Essential Criteria:

  • MBBS or equivalent medical degree
  • Full GMC registration
  • A valid acute care course certificate (ALS, ATLS, IMPACT or equivalent)
  • Minimum 12 months’ experience in adult general critical care
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Understanding of clinical governance and audit principles

Desirable Criteria:

  • Postgraduate examination pass (e.g., FRCA, MRCP, MCEM)
