Registrar in Acute Medicine

As a Registrar in Acute Medicine, you will play a decisive role in the assessment and treatment of patients who need hospital treatment for acute illnesses. Your clinical duties will consist of conducting ward rounds, operating outpatient clinics, and working as part of the Acute Medicine on call Rota. Alongside these duties you will also be expected to help train junior members of clinical staff as well as keep your own clinical portfolio up to date through study leave. 

Main Duties: 

 One of the main duties of this job is to work with and a contribute to a highly efficient team; meaning teamwork is very important. You will be expected to contribute as a vital member of the management of medical patients in an acute environment. The duties you will be expected to perform are as follows:

• Coordinate the care of patients on the wards.
• Manage acute medical emergencies arriving through the front door.
• Work as part of the acute on call rota. This covers 24-hour days, 7 days per week so you will be expected to work some overnights and weekends.
• Participate in Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings (MDTs) to manage patients who are struggling with issues across multiple specialties.
• As a senior figure within department, you will be required to assist with the training of junior clinicians in the team.
• Act as a senior member of the RRT (rapid resuscitation team) when required.
• Study leave will be available; you will need to make use of this to ensure your clinical practise is up to date.  
• Attend OPD clinics when required.

The hospital is part of one of the largest university teaching hospitals in the country and is based in the West Midlands. The hospital has a well-renowned educational department with learning materials on offer to any clinicians working at the hospital. Progression is very much encouraged as part of the culture at the Trust, if you’re coming to the hospital with a sub-specialty interest you will be assisted to learn and develop this interest within an NHS setting.

The West Midlands is one of the most sought-after locations in England and for good reason. It includes the UK’s second city, Birmingham, as well as the surrounding cluster of smaller towns and cities around it including Coventry, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Dudley. Combined, they make up the largest urban area in the country outside of London. It’s an area very well known for its cosmopolitan make-up of people. 

Compared to other regions in the UK, the West Midlands offers some very affordable housing options so it tends to be a suitable option if you have a large family to support. 

Because you’re based in the heart of England here, you’re ideally located for transport connections. There are quick, direct rail links to major cities like London, Manchester and Bristol. Birmingham Airport is located close by which offers direct flights to various destinations in Asia, Africa and America.

Requirements:

• Full MRCP 
• Experience seeing the acute unselected take  
• Previous experience working at ST3 level
