An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Locum Consultant Radiologist with a specialist interest in breast imaging to join the accomplished and friendly Radiology Directorate at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, a university teaching trust serving a population of 550,000 across Pennine Lancashire. This is a 2-year fixed-term post based at the dedicated Breast Imaging Unit at Burnley General Teaching Hospital, ideal for a consultant seeking a genuinely breast-focused job plan within a large, well-equipped and paperless department, alongside general and oncological cross-sectional reporting.

Key Requirements

Essential

  • Full GMC registration with your name on the Specialist Register (Clinical Radiology)
  • High level of clinical experience in breast radiology within the NHS
  • Ability to run one-stop symptomatic breast clinics independently, including mammographic interpretation and breast ultrasound
  • Independent percutaneous breast and axillary intervention under ultrasound guidance – FNA, core biopsy, vacuum-assisted biopsy and localisation wire insertion
  • Independent reporting of a wide range of general and oncological CT and MRI, plus general ultrasound lists
  • Ability to run a busy on-call independently on evenings and weekends
  • Experience supervising junior staff and working effectively within the MDT

 Desirable

  • Commitment to developing breast screening reading and running screening assessment clinics – full departmental training and support offered
  • Interest in gynae radiology
  • Evidence of teaching, mentorship, quality improvement work or peer-reviewed publications

 A balanced 10 PA job plan

  • 5 breast unit sessions, 2 acute CT/MRI reporting sessions, 1 general ultrasound session
  • 1.5 SPA for CPD, governance, QI and departmental activity, with on-call time in lieu built in
  • Job plan agreed with the Clinical Director and reviewed within your first 3 months
