Locum Consultant Paediatrician with a Respiratory Interest

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated paediatrician to join a large and supportive children’s service as a Locum Consultant in General Paediatrics with a Respiratory Interest. The post combines acute paediatrics with dedicated respiratory work, including specialist asthma clinics and participation in a weekly respiratory MDT. You will be supported by an experienced respiratory team and encouraged to develop your expertise in this subspecialty.

Main Duties: 

  • Acute general paediatric work across inpatients, assessment units and high-dependency care
  • On-call commitment (1:11) including stabilisation of sick children requiring intensive care transfer
  • Consultant-of-the-week model covering HDU, inpatients and the Paediatric Assessment Unit
  • Delivery of approximately 24 asthma clinics and 34 general paediatric clinics annually across multiple sites
  • Participation in teaching, audit, governance and clinical supervision of trainees

The Hospital:

The paediatric department is one of the largest in the region, providing inpatient, outpatient and emergency care to children across a diverse population. Facilities include:

  • A 20-bed paediatric ward with 6 HDU beds and a 12-bed Paediatric Assessment Unit
  • A busy emergency department seeing over 35,000 children annually
  • Designated Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) within the regional perinatal network
  • Children’s Assessment Unit at a neighbouring site with 12 beds and a nurse-training model
  • Outpatient services across multiple hospital sites, with opportunities for subspecialty development

The post is based in the West Midlands, offering the perfect balance of city life and surrounding countryside. Birmingham provides excellent cultural attractions, shopping and international cuisine, while the wider region includes the Cotswolds, Peak District and historic towns. There are strong transport links with direct rail services to London, excellent motorway connections, and Birmingham Airport nearby. Affordable housing and good schools make the area a great choice for families.


Requirements:

To apply for this position, you will need the following:

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCPCH
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Entry on the Specialist Register for Paediatrics (or within 6 months of CCT)
  • APLS/EPALS
  • Experience in acute paediatrics, with an interest in respiratory medicine (SPIN/GRID not essential)
  • Evidence of teaching, audit and service development
