A leading NHS hospital in the East of England is seeking a Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist with a subspecialty interest in Cornea. This role offers the opportunity to work within a large and progressive department serving a broad and diverse patient population. You’ll join a forward-thinking, well-supported ophthalmology team focused on delivering high-quality, innovative care.

Main Duties:

• Wards: You’ll work across several outpatient and theatre locations, with the main base at a central hospital and additional sessions at local satellite clinics and diagnostic hubs.
• Patient Demographic: Primarily corneal and external eye disease patients, alongside general ophthalmology cases including cataracts and immunosuppression-related conditions.
• Team: You will be supported by a multidisciplinary team of consultants, fellows, specialty doctors, orthoptists, optometrists, technicians, and research nurses.
• On-Call Rota: 1:8 low frequency (Category B), with 2% on-call supplement.
Non-Clinical Work: You’ll have dedicated SPA time for teaching (weekly sessions), research, audit, and service development. Opportunities for academic collaboration with a local university are also available.

This large teaching hospital includes multiple sites, housing specialist units, purpose-built outpatient facilities, dedicated theatres, and advanced diagnostic hubs. The ophthalmology service is well-equipped and structured for subspecialist service delivery, with strong academic, teaching, and clinical governance infrastructure.

Located in the East of England, this area offers an excellent quality of life with easy access to both countryside and city amenities. The city is well-connected via road and rail, with a direct line to London and a nearby international airport. The cost of living is moderate, and the area is family-friendly with numerous highly rated schools and a growing international community.

Requirements:

To apply for this position, you will need the following:
 • FRCOphth or equivalent specialist qualification
 • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or equivalent, or within 6 months of award
 • Strong experience in general ophthalmology and corneal surgery
 • Interest or experience in teaching, research, and clinical governance is desirable
