Role Summary
We are seeking a Consultant Haematologist to join a dynamic, integrated Haematology department across five hospital sites within University Hospitals South of England. The successful applicant will become part of a collaborative team of seven consultants, supported by Clinical Nurse Specialists, specialist trainees, and a staff grade doctor.
This is an exciting time to join, with services being reconfigured to provide a cohesive, clinically led model. The postholder will have a unique opportunity to shape the future development of the department and will be encouraged to establish a specialist interest that complements existing expertise. Interests in malignant haematology or haemostasis and thrombosis are particularly welcomed.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide inpatient care for haematology patients up to BCSH level 2B.
- Deliver outpatient clinics (new and follow-up patients).
- Participate in MDTs, departmental meetings, audit, and guideline development.
- Undertake bone marrow reporting, intrathecal chemotherapy administration, and supervision of trainees in blood film and bone marrow procedures.
- Provide consultative advice to colleagues across hospital and primary care settings.
- Engage in teaching, educational meetings, and journal clubs.
- Maintain involvement in clinical trials and research, with opportunities to contribute to high-profile national studies.
- Uphold professional development, appraisal, and revalidation requirements.
- Act as a departmental leader, supporting governance, audit, and service development initiatives.
Clinical Services
- Established BCSH level 2B treatment centres with a broad haemato-oncology practice.
- Comprehensive care in general haematology, including obstetrics, paediatrics, transfusion medicine, and haemostasis/thrombosis.
- Accredited Haemophilia Centre with close links to tertiary Comprehensive Care Centres.
- Strong network of tertiary referrals for complex cases, transplant, and radiotherapy.
- Anticoagulation services led by specialist nursing teams with consultant oversight.
- Paediatric oncology and leukaemia services delivered in liaison with Southampton and local paediatric consultants.
Research & Teaching
- Active clinical trials portfolio across malignant and non-malignant haematology.
- Dedicated research support team with strong track record in national trial recruitment.
Regular clinical governance sessions, journal clubs, teaching programmes, and an active audit portfolio.
