We are working with a leading Cancer Centre in North West England to recruit a Locum Consultant in Clinical Oncology, with a specialist interest in Head & Neck  and Lymphoma. 

Role and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in providing comprehensive care for patients with Head & Neck cancers and Lymphoma. The position is full time, structured around 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), although flexible and part-time arrangements will be considered.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Providing expert radiotherapy and systemic anti-cancer treatments.
  • Participating in and supporting established multidisciplinary teams.
  • Contributing to service development and continuous improvement of oncology services.
  • Supervising junior medical staff and supporting their educational needs.
  • Participating in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes.
  • Engaging in clinical research and audit.
  • Taking part in a second on-call rota, currently expected up to four times annually.
  • Supporting inpatient reviews during weekends (with the option to share this with a colleague on a part-time basis).

The typical weekly schedule includes outpatient clinics, radiotherapy planning, MDT attendance, admin time, ward rounds and dedicated time for supporting professional activities. Up to 2.5 PAs can be allocated for SPA work depending on individual interest.

The Hospital

The Cancer Centre where this post is based is a leading provider of systemic and radiotherapy services to a population of 1.8 million across the wider region. The main base is a purpose-built facility that offers:

  • Elekta linear accelerators with advanced imaging and treatment technologies.
  • Surface Guided Radiotherapy (SGRT).
  • Philips Big Bore CT scanners with contrast and 4D capability.
  • Pinnacle and Raystation treatment planning systems.
  • On-site Radiotherapy Physics support.
  • Dedicated chemotherapy units at two sites, supported by specialist nurses and a 24-hour helpline.
  • A newly refurbished inpatient ward with specialist end-of-life care spaces.
  • Macmillan support services and a dedicated Cancer Information Centre.

There are also strong links to research, with access to the NIHR Lancashire Clinical Research Facility and partnerships with local universities to support translational and laboratory-based research. Teaching and training are integral to the department, and the Trust is an approved training centre for oncology specialist registrars, therapeutic radiographers, and physics trainees.

The Requirements

Mandatory

  • GMC Registration with a license to practice 
  • Consultant level experience in Clinical Oncology
  • Experience managing radiotherapy and systemic therapies for Head + Neck and Lymphoma patients

Desirable:

  • Driving license 
  • NHS experience 
  • CESR or CCT (within 6 months) or a solid grounding in the process
