We are seeking a Consultant Radiologist with a specialist interest in Nuclear Medicine to join a modern, forward-thinking diagnostic imaging service in the North West of England. This is an exciting opportunity to work within a rapidly developing department equipped with advanced imaging technology, AI-enabled workflows, and a strong commitment to service excellence.

 

The service operates across an acute hospital site, community hospitals, and primary care settings. Following recent refurbishment and investment, the department now benefits from state-of-the-art facilities, including two nuclear medicine gamma cameras and a recently upgraded enterprise-wide PACS system. This role offers significant potential to contribute to a growing imaging service, shape subspecialty pathways, and be involved in teaching, research, and service innovation.

 

The Role

As a Consultant Radiologist with a subspecialty interest in Nuclear Medicine, you will:

  • Provide a comprehensive diagnostic radiology service, including CT, MRI, ultrasound, plain film, and nuclear medicine.
  • Deliver high-quality reporting across a wide range of diagnostic nuclear medicine examinations, including cardiac studies.
  • Utilise advanced imaging techniques, with extensive experience in SPECT-CT being essential.
  • Contribute to clinical opinions for patients across acute and community services.
  • Participate in service development as the department continues to refine its working models to improve efficiency and minimise interruptions.
  • Engage in MDTs, clinical governance, audit, teaching, and research.
  • Supervise and train radiology trainees and junior staff.

 

Who We’re Looking For

Applicants must hold FRCR or equivalent, have substantive experience in nuclear medicine, and ideally possess (or be eligible for) an ARSAC Practitioner Licence.

 

Essential Criteria

  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • On the Specialist Register, or within 6 months of achieving CCT
  • MB ChB or equivalent medical degree
  • Postgraduate certification in Nuclear Medicine
  • Excellent communication, organisational, and leadership skills
  • Ability to prioritise workload, supervise staff, and contribute to a multidisciplinary team
  • Working knowledge of RIS/PACS
  • Commitment to CPD, clinical governance, and patient safety

Desirable Criteria

  • Subspecialty fellowship or higher degree (e.g., PhD)
  • Experience in advanced nuclear medicine techniques
  • Track record in research with peer-reviewed publications
  • Educational qualifications or interest in medical education

The imaging department delivers both general and subspecialty services across multiple sites and includes:

  • A team of over 20 consultant radiologists across varied subspecialties
  • Dedicated nuclear medicine facilities with two modern gamma cameras
  • A recently upgraded enterprise-wide digital imaging system
  • A future-proofed equipment replacement programme
  • Active involvement in teaching, quality improvement, audit, and research

Job Plan & Timetable

The post is offered at 10 PAs, with a typical indicative split of 8 DCC : 2 SPA, including:

Clinical Duties (Indicative)

  • CT/MR reporting
  • Plain film & ultrasound sessions
  • Nuclear medicine reporting, including SPECT-CT
  • MDT preparation and attendance
  • On-call participation (rota under review as workforce expands)
  • Support for community diagnostic imaging

SPA Activities

  • CPD, appraisal, and job planning
  • Teaching and training
  • Audit, QI, and mandatory training
  • Participation in departmental meetings

 

There is flexibility within the timetable to support teaching, research, and future service development.
