Consultant Psychiatrist in General Adult Psychiatry – Community Mental Health

We are working with a forward-thinking NHS Mental Health Trust in North London to recruit a Consultant Psychiatrist to join a core Community Mental Health Team. This post offers the opportunity to work in a dynamic, well-resourced team serving adults with moderate to severe mental health needs. You will work in a key leadership position, helping to shape community services and provide holistic, recovery-oriented care.

Main Duties:


• Wards/Setting: Community-based role with patient contact primarily in a clinic setting; home visits and community outreach where appropriate.
• Patient Demographics: Adults with moderate to severe mental illness including psychotic disorders, bipolar disorder, major depression, personality disorders, and complex anxiety disorders.
• Team Composition: Multidisciplinary team including another consultant psychiatrist, specialty doctors, core trainees, care coordinators, psychologists, pharmacists, and social care professionals.
• On-Call Rota: Approx. 1:30–1:40 rota (Category A, 3% supplement). Support available from full trainee rotas at all sites.
Non-Clinical Time: 2.5 PAs allocated to SPA including teaching, CPD, research, and management.

The Hospital:

You will be working within a large, merged NHS Foundation Trust providing mental health care across five North London boroughs. The Trust is focused on community-based delivery, with inpatient services available locally when needed. It has access to a range of acute wards, PICU, liaison psychiatry, rehabilitation, crisis teams, and specialist services (e.g. ADHD, perinatal, personality disorders, and memory clinics). Strong links exist with regional academic centres, particularly University College London.

The service operates in a diverse and vibrant borough of North London. The area offers excellent public transport links, including Tube and National Rail services, and is easily accessible from central London and nearby counties. With a mix of leafy suburbs and urban centres, the area has a broad demographic and is home to a thriving international community. It boasts a wide selection of schools, parks, and cultural amenities, making it ideal for families as well as professionals relocating from abroad.

Requirements:

To apply for this position, you will need the following:
 • Full MRCPsych or equivalent
 • GMC registration with a licence to practise
 • Section 12(2) approval and Approved Clinician status (or eligibility to achieve within 3 months)
 • Experience working in community psychiatry and complex mental health care
 • Supervisory and team leadership capabilities
