Consultant Paediatrician - Interest in Neonates
- £105,504 to £139,882
- UK, South West
- Permanent
An well-established NHS Trust in the South West is seeking a Consultant General Paediatrician with a special interest in Neonatology. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced paediatrician to join a highly supportive team, providing both neonatal and general paediatric care in a progressive environment.
Role and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will take a leading role in providing neonatal care through a 1:7 rota. This includes on-call responsibility for a level 2 Local Neonatal Unit, covering neonatal intensive care, high dependency, special care, postnatal wards and deliveries. There is an expectation to assist the general paediatric team with infants under 10kg requiring high dependency or intensive care support.
The role includes general paediatric outpatient clinics, safeguarding clinics and potential for a specialist interest clinic, aligned with departmental needs. Clinics are held mainly onsite, with some outreach in community settings/GP surgeries. The post also involves contributing to an 'advice and triage' service for primary care referrals.
Consultants will participate in clinical governance, teaching, audit and research, as well as supporting junior staff and contributing to the wider development of services within the department. There are opportunities to develop leadership roles and educational responsibilities.
The Hospital
The hospital is part of a larger, integrated NHS Trust, serving a significant population in the South West. Although the role is cross-site, it is primarily based at the main hospital campus, where all neonatal and most outpatient paediatric services are delivered.
The Local Neonatal Unit includes provides care for preterm infants from 27 weeks. The service is supported by a regional neonatal transport network and maintains strong links with nearby tertiary centres. The team includes neonatal consultants, advanced nurse practitioners, middle grade doctors and a well-established nursing team. A 24/7 ANNP rota is being developed to further enhance care.
General paediatric care is delivered on separate acute wards and a paediatric assessment unit. Specialist outpatient services are well established, with visiting consultants from tertiary centres supporting regional care. Safeguarding is a key part of the service, and there is a dedicated clinic and rota for safeguarding assessments.
The Trust is actively involved in medical education and research, hosting medical students from multiple universities and supporting ongoing clinical trials. The department is known for its excellent teaching environment and commitment to continuous improvement.
The Location
Situated in a vibrant town within the South West of England, this hospital is surrounded by areas of outstanding natural beauty. The region offers an excellent quality of life, combining rural charm with convenient access to city amenities. There are excellent transport links, with direct rail services to London taking under two hours and the motorway nearby.
The area is ideal for families and professionals seeking a balance of professional opportunity and outdoor lifestyle. It boasts plenty of high-performing schools and affordable housing, making it a popular destination for medical professionals relocating with their families.
