Consultant Obstetric Physician
- £105,504 to £139,882
- UK, South Coast
- Permanent
We are working with a leading service on the South Coast of England, seeking a Consultant Obstetric Physician to join a well-established and collaborative multidisciplinary team. This is a unique opportunity to support and shape maternal medicine across a regional network, delivering high-quality care to women and birthing people with complex medical needs before, during and after pregnancy. Whether you're a trained obstetric physician or a physician with a strong foundation in general or acute medicine, we welcome your enthusiasm to develop further in this rewarding field.
Role and Responsibilities
You will work alongside obstetric and midwifery leads across a wide regional footprint. Core responsibilities will include:
- Providing direct clinical care through pre-conception, antenatal, and inpatient consultations
- Collaborating with colleagues in obstetrics, midwifery, anaesthesia, and various medical specialties to optimise care for pregnant patients with underlying medical conditions
- Offering advice and triage support for complex referrals across the network.
- Leading on education, service development, and quality improvement in maternal medicine
- Engaging in multidisciplinary team meetings and network-wide strategic discussions
- Supporting the development of clinical pathways, guidelines, and patient education resources
- Participating in research projects that aim to enhance maternal outcomes.
- Contributing to training of junior doctors and the professional development of wider MDT members
The provisional job plan includes 10 PAs per week, with activities spanning outpatient clinics, MDTs, regional administration, and professional development. There is currently no on-call requirement, although applicants seeking on-call commitments may be accommodated where appropriate.
The Hospital
The hospital is a regional centre of excellence and houses one of the most established maternal medicine services in the country. The maternity unit handles approximately 5,000 births annually and serves as the hub for a wider network that oversees around 30,000 births per year.
The service benefits from close integration with a neighbouring general hospital offering comprehensive tertiary services, including adult congenital cardiology, endocrinology, neurology, nephrology, haematology, and stroke medicine. A wide spectrum of specialist input supports the obstetric medicine team, making this an ideal environment for clinicians interested in managing complex maternal cases.
The hospital is also a teaching and research centre affiliated with a leading university. Staff are actively involved in national research through the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DoHAD) division.
The Location
The hospital is based in a vibrant coastal city in South Central England, known for its maritime heritage, diverse communities, and excellent transport links to London and the South West. The surrounding region combines the advantages of city life with easy access to countryside, national parks, and beaches.
For families, the area offers a broad choice of good schools, leisure facilities, and cultural venues. Housing is varied, with options ranging from city apartments to rural retreats. Whether you're relocating as a family or an individual, the area provides an excellent quality of life and a supportive community.
