Are you a passionate and driven Neuro-Ophthalmologist looking to take the next step in your career? We’re recruiting for an exciting Locum Consultant Neuro-Ophthalmologist position at a leading tertiary neuroscience centre. This is a unique opportunity to lead and shape a regional neuro-ophthalmology service within a dynamic and forward-thinking NHS Trust, renowned for clinical excellence, research, and innovation.

The Job

We are seeking a Locum Consultant Neuro‑Ophthalmologist on a full‑time, fixed‑term basis (10 PAs per week) for a 2‑year assignment. You will lead a tertiary specialist neuro‑ophthalmology service, managing referrals for both afferent and efferent conditions. The post includes developing an emergency clinical service across the region and contributing to research within the department. While most of your sessions will be at the main hospital, there may be duties at other sites. Flexibility is key, as timetable may include evening or weekend sessions, and clinical activity may involve community‑based or remote consultation services. There is no regular on‑call requirement currently, but future involvement in out‑of‑hours trauma services may arise.

The Location

This position is based at a tertiary neurosciences centre within a major urban hospital, integrating neuro‑ophthalmology with neurology, neurosurgery, neuroradiology, neurovascular, skull base/pituitary, and CSF MDTs. The wider ophthalmology service spans several regional hospitals, ensuring cross‑site collaboration and service coverage.

The Trust

The hospital is part of a leading NHS Foundation Trust, renowned nationally for its excellence. The Trust is dedicated to building healthier lives through a supportive working culture with a strong focus on staff development, wellbeing, and inclusion. Initiatives include flexible working arrangements, comprehensive training opportunities, study leave funding, and a zero‑tolerance smoke‑free policy. Secretarial and administrative support is provided. The post adheres to standard NHS terms and conditions for Hospital Medical and Dental staff.

The Requirements

  • Full UK medical registration with GMC (or equivalent) is essential.
  • Post‑CCT subspecialty training in neuro‑ophthalmology preferred.
  • Responsibility for establishing and developing the local service is expected.
  • Strong research and academic interest to contribute to the department’s portfolio.
  • Demonstrable flexibility to accommodate occasional evening, weekend, or remote sessions
