About the Hospitals/Trusts

Birmingham and the surrounding region offer a strong mix of acute NHS providers-from large teaching centres to high-performing district general hospitals. We regularly support placements across the following Trusts:

  • University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust - One of the UK’s largest acute providers, with extensive tertiary and critical care services.
  • Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust - Acute services across Birmingham and Sandwell, with new facilities coming online.
  • University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust - Regional major trauma and wide-ranging specialist services close to Birmingham.
  • Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust - District general acute services with strong urgent and emergency care.
  • The Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust - Acute and specialist elective services serving Dudley and surrounding areas.
  • Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust - Three acute sites providing comprehensive emergency and planned care to the wider region.
  • University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust - Major acute services for Staffordshire (including Stoke‑on‑Trent) within reach of the West Midlands.
  • Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust - Acute care across two main hospitals serving Shropshire and mid‑Wales border communities.

Together these Trusts create a diverse clinical landscape with excellent opportunities for training, sub-specialisation and progression across medicine, surgery, emergency and diagnostic services.

About the Jobs

Regional oncology services are closely integrated with cancer alliances, offering structured exposure to systemic therapies, radiotherapy and acute oncological care. Doctors contribute to holistic, protocol‑driven treatment across tumour sites.

  • Outpatients - assessment and follow‑up across common tumour sites (breast, lung, GI, GU, gynaecology, haematological malignancies).
  • Systemic anti‑cancer therapy - prescribing/monitoring chemotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted agents within MDT‑agreed protocols.
  • Inpatients - management of treatment‑related complications (neutropenic sepsis, electrolyte disorders, thromboembolism) and oncological emergencies.
  • Radiotherapy interface - opportunities to gain experience in planning and delivery alongside specialist colleagues.
  • Supportive care - close work with palliative care, nutrition and rehabilitation services.

The speciality blends acute medicine with longitudinal patient relationships and access to evolving, research‑driven therapies.

Living in Birmingham

  • Transport - Birmingham Airport connects widely across Europe and beyond; Birmingham New Street offers fast intercity trains. The M6, M5 and M42 provide excellent road access across the UK.
  • Education - The University of Birmingham, Aston University and Birmingham City University anchor higher education, with many "Good” and “Outstanding” schools across the city and suburbs.
  • Community - Birmingham Central Mosque, St Philip’s Cathedral and Guru Nanak Gurdwara Smethwick reflect the city’s diverse faiths and communities.
