We are working with a leading teaching hospital in the East Midlands to recruit a Consultant Medical Oncologist with a specialist interest in Breast and Lung cancers. This is a newly created post, part of an expansion of the hospital's high-quality cancer services. You will join a team of dedicated oncology consultants, specialist nurses, and academic professionals in delivering excellent, patient-focused care with strong emphasis on research and  education. 

Role and Responsibilities

This is a full-time (10 PA) post with a focus on Breast and Lung cancer, incorporating outpatient clinics at two sites, inpatient care, multi-disciplinary team involvement, and opportunities to contribute to clinical research and teaching.

The postholder will:

  • Provide clinical care at the main site and a satellite clinic, supported by clinical nurse specialists and fellow consultants.
  • Join a collaborative team providing care across a catchment population of approximately 1.1 million people, with an annual throughput of 5,000 new oncology patients.
  • Contribute to both Early and Advanced Breast cancer services, which collectively receive around 100 new patient referrals per year.
  • Provide Lung oncology care, with around 60 new patients annually at the satellite clinic.
  • Participate in MDT meetings, outpatient clinics, systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT) sessions, ward rounds, and administration.
  • Take part in a 1:20 on-call rota, supported by junior staff.
  • Play an active role in governance, service development, clinical audit, and education of junior doctors and students.
  • Engage in research and teaching in conjunction with a highly regarded academic institution.

  • Two outpatient systemic therapy wards, plus a specialist 24/7 admission unit for oncology patients.

  • Academic partnerships with a leading UK university offering substantial research collaboration and training opportunities.

  • Dedicated support for consultants, including office space, IT facilities and structured mentorship for new appointees.

This role is based in a bustling city in the East Midlands, known for its high-quality education and excellent connectivity. The city has a population of over 300,000, with a wide variety of housing options and schools. Two prominent universities and several sixth-form colleges are based in the area, making it popular with families seeking higher education opportunities for their children. 

There is plenty here to keep the family entertained, from sports and arts venues, to  music arenas, theatres and historical landmarks. The city sits within close proximity to the M1 motorway, in addition to high-speed rail connections to London and other cities. There are also two international airports can be reached within an hour. 

The Requirements

Essential:

  • Full GMC registration and eligibility for the Specialist Register in Medical Oncology.
  • Demonstrated experience and clinical skills in the management of Breast and/or Lung cancers.
  • Excellent communication skills with patients and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and contribute to service development.
  • Commitment to clinical audit, governance, and evidence-based practice.
  • Familiarity with Trust values and ability to align with professional standards.

Desirable:

  • Higher academic qualification (e.g., MD or PhD).
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Specific training in communication skills, patient safety, or human factors.
  • Experience with research governance and involvement in clinical trials.
  • Prior management or leadership training or experience.
  • Teaching qualification or evidence of significant involvement in medical education.
