Job Title – Consultant in Learning Disability Psychiatry

 A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join a dynamic, multi-disciplinary Learning Disability service in the locality. This role offers the chance to work within a well-established, forward-thinking team delivering specialist care to adults with learning disabilities across the region. You’ll play a key leadership role in delivering high-quality psychiatric care, shaping service development, and contributing to education and research initiatives.

Main Duties:

  • Wards and settings: You’ll be primarily based at an Acute Assessment Unit, with regular outpatient clinics and home visits (SA4–SA7).
  • Patient group: Adults aged 18+ with mental health problems and learning disabilities, including complex cases requiring secondary care.
  • Team structure: Work alongside a multidisciplinary team including other consultant psychiatrists, junior doctors (CT2 and higher trainees when allocated), nurses, psychologists, OTs, SALTs, physiotherapists, and social workers.
  • On-call rota: 1 in 8, with prospective cover.
  • Non-clinical work: You’ll have regular SPA time for continuing professional development, teaching, audit, mentoring junior doctors, research, and quality improvement projects.

The Hospital:
 This is a university-affiliated health board serving a large population across multiple regions in South Wales. Services are delivered across several sites, with specialist inpatient and community-based mental health and learning disability care. The hospital system includes facilities at three sites, with modern educational and IT infrastructure.

The Location:
 The city is a vibrant coastal part of South Wales with a population of around 250,000. It boasts beautiful beaches, a strong international community, excellent schools, and affordable housing. With excellent rail and motorway links, Cardiff is just under an hour away and London reachable in under three hours. The city is also within close proximity to Bristol and has good access to international airports. It's a family-friendly location with a high quality of life, access to the Gower Peninsula (an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty), and a growing digital and academic hub.

Requirements:
 To apply for this position, you will need the following:

  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych)
  • Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register in Psychiatry (or CCT within 6 months, or CESR)
  • Valid Section 12(2) Approval and eligibility for Approved Clinician status
  • Proven experience working with individuals with learning disabilities and complex mental health needs
  • A strong background in audit, clinical governance, teaching, and multidisciplinary collaboration
