An East Midlands NHS Trust is looking to appoint a Consultant Haematologist with a specialist interest in red cell disorders and non-malignant haematology. This role would be suited to a consultant seeking to develop a growing regional service for haemoglobinopathies, general haematology, thrombosis and haemostasis. The successful applicant will join a dedicated, multidisciplinary team within a department recognised for its innovation and research excellence.

Role and Responsibilities

The role centres on the development and delivery of high-quality care for patients with red cell disorders, including sickle cell disease, thalassaemia and rare inherited anaemias. You will work closely with a Consultant Clinical Lead and a dedicated CNS team to enhance services and expand outreach support across a wide catchment area.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Delivering two red cell clinics per week, with scope for a third depending on your interests.
  • Providing consultant-led inpatient care for patients with ITP, TTP, AIHA and red cell disorders.
  • Participating in a non-malignant haematology on-call rota (non-resident).
  • Leading or supporting services in thrombosis, haemostasis, general haematology or transfusion.
  • Supporting nurse-led clinics in hydroxycarbamide management, iron chelation and paediatric transitions.
  • Participating in community outreach, including clinics at neighbouring hospitals.
  • Contributing to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, mentoring trainees and engaging in clinical research.

You will be allocated 10 Programmed Activities, including ward rounds, outpatient care, diagnostic lab work, MDTs, clinical governance and teaching. You’ll also have opportunities to shape and grow the Trust’s red cell research portfolio.

The Hospital

You will be based in a leading regional centre that operates across multiple sites. The Clinical Haematology service is primarily delivered from a modern facility, purpose-built to house inpatients, outpatients, day care and research services. The unit includes:

  • Two inpatient wards, including a Bone Marrow Transplant Unit.
  • A 22-station Day Unit, apheresis services and an outpatient suite.
  • A research team with 15.6 WTE staff and active involvement in national clinical trials.
  • Close ties with the University Medical School, and access to academic and laboratory facilities.

The department supports around 430 haemoglobinopathy patients and handles 650 clinic episodes per year. Services also include:

  • A regional TTP Network based at the hospital.
  • A comprehensive care centre for adult haemophilia and thrombosis.
  • Integrated antenatal screening and transfusion services.
  • Laboratory support across both main hospital sites, including a haemostasis and thrombosis reference lab.

The Location

The hospital is based in a major city in the East Midlands, offering a vibrant mix of cultural and recreational opportunities. With a population of over 300,000, the area is popular for excellent schools and two major universities. There is a thriving arts scene, with plenty of theatres, music venues, museums, and galleries to choose from. Residents enjoy the city's connectivity, with direct rail links to London and other major cities. For those who travel regularly, the city is within easy reach of two international airports.

The Requirements

Essential Criteria:

  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise, or eligibility within six months of interview.
  • FRCPath or equivalent qualification.
  • MRCP or equivalent.
  • Experience and interest in non-malignant haematology: red cells, thrombosis, haemostasis.
  • Ability to lead and deliver high-quality care within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Commitment to patient-centred care and evidence-based practice.
  • Engagement in clinical governance, audit and quality improvement.
  • Strong communication skills and flexibility to adapt to a changing service.

  • Higher professional qualifications (e.g. MD, PhD).
  • Experience of clinical trials and original research publications.
