We are working with an NHS Trust in the West Midlands who are seeking to appoint a Consultant Haematologist. This is a full-time, permanent post offering the opportunity to work in a well-equipped Cancer and Haematology Centre and provide care to a diverse population across both hospital and community settings.
Role and Responsibilities
The successful applicant will join a close-knit team of Consultant and Clinical Nurse Specialists, contributing to both general and specialist haematology services. The department delivers BSH Level 2b care and serves a population of around 520,000 people. Sub-specialist interests can be accommodated within the role depending on the expertise of the appointee.
Clinical duties include:
- Outpatient clinics at two hospital sites (minimum three clinics per week)
- Inpatient ward rounds and shared responsibility for haematology inpatients
- Participation in a weekly Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) meeting
- Involvement in laboratory work and bone marrow biopsy reporting
- Shared on-call service (1:6 weekends, non-resident overnight)
Supporting professional activities include:
- Continuing professional development (CPD)
- Teaching and training junior staff
- Clinical audit and participation in research and trial recruitment
The indicative weekly timetable includes outpatient clinics, ward referrals, lab cover, SPA sessions and administrative time. The job plan comprises 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), with 7.5 allocated to direct clinical care and 2.5 to supporting activities. An additional PA and supplement apply for on-call duties.
The Hospital
The department is based within a purpose-built Cancer and Haematology Centre, which houses five consulting rooms, a 10-seat day treatment unit, and side rooms for procedures including bone marrow biopsies and intrathecal chemotherapy. There is close integration with oncology services, radiotherapy, palliative care and the Macmillan support centre.
The haematology service also operates a satellite unit at a second hospital site, providing outpatient care and selected treatments, with plans for expansion under the Hospital Transformation Programme.
The inpatient ward includes 30 beds, 8 side rooms (6 HEPA-filtered), and is supported by a dedicated nursing team and junior doctors. Administrative support includes medical secretaries and clerical staff, and all consultants have designated office space and IT facilities.
Laboratory services are fully UKAS-accredited and handle over 500,000 tests annually. There is close collaboration with regional centres for complex diagnostics and shared care arrangements for patients requiring advanced therapies such as transplantation and CAR-T.

The Requirements
Essential Criteria:
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- FRCPath (Haematology) and MRCP (UK) or equivalent
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
- Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register in Haematology (or eligibility within six months)
- Ability to independently manage a range of haematological conditions
- Experience in clinical audit
- Strong teamworking, communication, and teaching skills
Desirable Criteria:
- Higher degree (MD, PhD)
- Evidence of active involvement in research
- Experience leading service development or quality improvement projects
