Consultant in Acute Medicine
- £111,430 - £148,064
- UK, Scotland
- Fixed
This is an exciting opportunity for a Consultant in Acute Medicine to join a forward-thinking and collaborative acute care team, in a modern hospital setting in Scotland.
Role and Responsibilities
The successful applicant will contribute to the provision of high-quality, consultant-led care across multiple areas of the acute pathway, including:
- Combined Assessment Unit (CAU), comprising 35 single-bed rooms receiving patients from GP and ED referrals
- Rapid Assessment and Care Unit (RAC/SDEC), which has seen significant recent investment and development, including enhanced imaging, transport and referral infrastructure
- Medical High Dependency Unit (HDU), a 12-bedded Level 2 unit jointly managed by Acute and ICU consultants, supporting some of the sickest medical patients
Day-to-day responsibilities include consultant-led ward rounds, continuous assessment of new and ongoing admissions, direct clinical supervision of junior staff, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams across the acute floor. A flexible job plan will be agreed with successful applicants, with dedicated time for continuing professional development (2 SPAs), service innovation and specialist interest areas. Interim and annual job plan reviews will ensure alignment with evolving personal and departmental priorities. Less than full-time and compressed working patterns are fully supported.
There is strong encouragement for consultants to lead or contribute to service development projects and governance activities, including clinical audits, education, and morbidity and mortality reviews.
The Hospital
The successful applicant will be based in a modern general hospital equipped with over 500 beds, including dedicated units for acute care, stroke, coronary care, renal high dependency and infectious diseases. The hospital has a strong emphasis on consultant-led acute care, supported by a team of acute medicine consultants and a wide range of advanced nurse practitioners, specialty doctors and trainees.
Its Combined Assessment Unit (CAU) receives approximately 60–70 patients per day, with a discharge rate of 50%, reflecting efficient triage and treatment protocols.
Additional infrastructure includes:
- Pharmacy unit with extended weekday and weekend hours
- Frailty services led by a specialist consultant and Advanced Care of the Elderly practitioners
- Strong links with specialty teams for in-reach services, including cardiology and palliative care
- A bespoke eWhiteboard system to track patient flow and consultant input
Weekly departmental teaching takes place every Thursday, and new consultants benefit from a development programme with topics such as job planning and management skills.
The Location
The hospital is situated in the vibrant town of Kilmarnock in South West Scotland. The town offers a balance of urban convenience and access to scenic countryside, ideal for families and professionals alike. With a population of approximately 47,000, it boasts a strong sense of community, good schooling options, and a variety of cultural and recreational amenities.
The wider region offers excellent transport links to nearby cities, coastal destinations, and outdoor pursuits including hiking, cycling, and watersports. Housing is affordable, and the area provides an excellent quality of life for those seeking a blend of clinical challenge and personal wellbeing.
