One of the largest NHS Health Boards in South Wales is looking to recruit a Consultant Haematologist to join a friendly and dynamic team. Role and Responsibilities

You will be involved in both malignant and general haematology. The post offers broad clinical exposure with shared responsibilities across:

  • Clinical haematology, laboratory haematology and liaison services
  • Equitable participation in the on-call rota
  • Reporting of bone marrow samples, trephine biopsies and blood films
  • Supporting patients undergoing chemotherapy and other treatments related to haematological malignancies

Applicants with any subspecialty interest are encouraged to apply, although experience in haematological malignancy and chemotherapy is desirable.

You’ll be part of a team helping shape the future of the haematology service as it undergoes an exciting transformation. This includes:

  • Expansion of the medical and nursing team, including development of Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Consultant Nurses, and Clinical Scientists
  • Sub-specialisation within the department
  • Closer collaboration with neighbouring health boards and NHS trusts

The post-holder will also be expected to engage in teaching, contribute to service development, and potentially participate in or lead research initiatives.

The Hospital

The role is based at a busy district general hospital that serves a wide population across three county boroughs. It offers a broad range of inpatient and outpatient services, including specialist and diagnostic care. The haematology department is a BCSH Level 2 service with strong ties to a regional Haematology and Bone Marrow Transplant Centre for more complex patient pathways.

The Requirements

Essential Criteria:

  • Full and specialist registration with the GMC (or eligibility within six months of interview)
  • FRCPath or evidence of an equivalent qualification
  • For UK-trained applicants: Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or within six months of achieving CCT at the time of interview
  • For non-UK-trained applicants: Evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
  • Demonstrated competence in clinical and laboratory haematology, including haematological oncology and interpretation of marrow and blood films
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven leadership and team-working skills
  • Interest in teaching and multidisciplinary working

Desirable Criteria:

  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Management qualifications or service development experience
  • Research background, particularly in laboratory-based work
  • Broader clinical interests beyond haematology
