6 minutes

The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) assess Specialist International Medical Graduates (SIMGs) for recognition in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Australia. This guide helps overseas-trained SIMGs understand the process and achieve specialist registration.

Before applying, ensure your qualifications meet RANZCOG's requirements. This includes completing a recognized specialist training program and being recognized as a specialist in your home country.

Step 1:  Eligibility/ Documents

You’ll need the following documents:

  • Identity & Registration: Certified copy of passport, medical registration certificates (e.g., GMC), and AMC verification of your medical degree.
  • Qualifications: Certified copies of your primary medical degree (MBBS/MBChB) and postgraduate Obstetrics & Gynaecology qualifications (e.g., MRCOG, CCT).
  • CV: A detailed CV with your medical school, postgraduate training, specialist experience, and sub-specialty exposure (e.g., maternal-fetal medicine, gynaecological oncology).
  • References: 2–3 references from senior physicians confirming your competence and professionalism.
  • Clinical Experience: Logbooks, case summaries, or performance evaluations.
  • English Proficiency (if required): IELTS, OET, or equivalent (usually not required for UK-trained doctors).

Step 2: Choose the Correct Pathway

Application Form & Pathway Selection

Applicants must select the appropriate application form and pathway. Choosing the correct pathway ensures the application is assessed efficiently.

  • General Pathway: For most international specialists.
  • Expedited Pathway: For UK/Ireland-trained specialists with qualifications comparable to Australian standards, requiring less documentation.

Pathway Options:

Step 4: Interim Assessment & Interview

If eligible, you'll be invited for an interview to discuss your training, qualifications, and understanding of the Australian healthcare system. Prepare to discuss your case examples, teaching activities, and sub-specialty exposure.

Step 5: Assessment Outcomes

After the interview, you’ll receive one of three outcomes:

  • Substantially Comparable: Requires up to 12 months of supervised practice.
  • Partially Comparable: May require additional practice or assessments.
  • Not Comparable: Requires full RANZCOG Fellowship Training.

Step 6: Supervised Practice (for Substantially Comparable Applicants)

  • Nominate a RANZCOG Fellow as your training supervisor.
  • Submit forms and perform quarterly evaluations and feedback.
  • Engage in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) as an Educational Affiliate of RANZCOG.

Step 7: Certification & Fellowship

Once you complete supervised practice and assessments, apply for Fellowship of RANZCOG (FRANZCOG) or sub-specialty certification. The SIMG Assessment Committee reviews your application for final approval.
