Specialty Doctor General Medicine

As a Specialty Doctor in General Medicine, you will play a crucial role in managing and treating patients with acute medical conditions and ensuring that they receive timely and appropriate care.

You will work as a key part of a dynamic and welcoming General Medicine service within the Health Board. The department have very recently had a business case approved to bring on one Specialty Doctor in addition to three SHOs.

This is a great opportunity for those who are looking to enter a specialty training programme but just need some more time/experience; those working towards MRCP/CESR (you will be supported to complete these); or those who have decided to enter a non-training post.

You will be part of the medical on-call team and you will be supported and encouraged to develop a specialist interest in an area in medicine such as Stroke Medicine, Renal Medicine, Gastroenterology, Respiratory, Geriatric Medicine and Cardiology.

Main Duties:

You will be responsible for the routine and emergency admission of patients.

You’ll be expected to participate in the General Medicine on call rota.

You will be required to attend MDT (Multi-Disciplinary Team) meetings and liaise with colleagues, GPs and nurses to help ensure patients presenting a broad range of issues are given a high standard of care.

You will carry out daily ward rounds to assess progress of patients, you’ll also ensure that all treatments ordered are carried out.

You’ll be required to teach and supervise junior doctors within department as well as occasionally present lectures to nursing staff to assist with their development.

You’ll need to keep accurate patient notes and ensure paperwork is processed on time.

You’ll be expected to keep your clinical procedures and knowledge up to date. Your portfolio will need to be regularly updated. You will be provided a period of study leave to assist you with this.

The hospital is a medium-sized district acute hospital. It has a long-standing academic partnership with a local university so there are plenty of opportunities to teach medicine students alongside performing your clinical duties. The hospital has a friendly cosmopolitan workforce, you will be welcomed as an important part of the team. You’ll benefit from the structured support system the hospital has put in place to help IMGs get used to the NHS system. The Health Board has an excellent reputation for the research and development opportunities it can offer to clinicians that work for them.

The location:

The hospital is based on the south coast of Wales, near to cities like Swansea and Cardiff. You can live in ether of these cities if you prefer a more urban lifestyle or you can choose to live just next to the hospital about 20 minutes from either city. South Wales has some of the lowest living costs in the whole of the UK. The region also promotes quite a healthy lifestyle as you’ll be far away from the pollution of larger cities and around some stunning scenery.

Requirements:

• GMC registration complete or in process.
• Relevant postgraduate qualification (MRCP, USMLE, PLAB, Sri Lankan MD etc.)
• IELTS/OET complete
• Two years of Registrar experience overseas or in the UK
