  • East Midlands

As a Specialist in Elderly Medicine, you will be responsible for providing medical care to elderly patients, addressing their unique healthcare needs and promoting their well-being. Your role will involve geriatric assessments, diagnosis, and the development of personalized treatment plans. You will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team, including geriatricians, nurses, therapists, and social workers, to ensure holistic and patient-centered care. Geriatric medicine is an excellent way for international doctors to enter the NHS system, as it is well-aligned with general internal medicine overseas. If you have a special interest in elderly care, and a wide range of experience in medicine, then this job position is perfect for you.

Main Duties:

  • Supporting the care of the elderly inpatient wards
  • Managing outpatient areas, frailty, and community work
  • Contribute to a multi-disciplinary team, working alongside nurses, therapists, and practitioners from other specialties to ensure the holistic care of elderly patients.
  • Participate in teaching and education schemes of junior doctors and colleagues.
  • Carry out audit responsibilities.
  • Work within the framework of policies and procedures relevant to medical staff.

The Hospital:

The hospital is committed to providing high-quality healthcare services to the local community. The hospital's geriatric department specializes in caring for elderly patients, aiming to address their unique healthcare needs and improve their quality of life. There are multiple medical wards providing care to the elderly patients, including wards in the acute stroke unit, and acute frailty areas. The department offers comprehensive geriatric assessments, personalized care plans, and a multidisciplinary approach involving healthcare professionals like geriatricians, nurses, therapists, and social workers. Services may include rehabilitation for functional recovery, falls prevention programs, dementia and cognitive care, and specialized support for palliative and end-of-life care. The department's focus on providing outstanding care for older individuals contributes to its vital role within the medical services. The geriatric department is looking to restructure its Care of Elderly bed base to include a short stay frailty area, and there is also a Stroke Unit, which can provide experience in stroke management and offer clinical sessions in Stroke if you are interested. The department offers outpatient care for falls, incontinence, Parkinson's disease, and more.
