This is a really exciting opportunity for multiple Obstetric Anaesthetists to take up 12-month fellowship within a large, tertiary referral Women’s hospital in the East Midlands. The position is fantastic for any Anaesthetist looking to pursue a career in Obstetric anaesthesia, giving senior trainees exposure to high-risk obstetrics and maternal medicine whilst providing an opportunity to engage in education.
You will be encouraged to attend multidisciplinary high risk antenatal clinics and be involved with the delivery of anaesthesia in complex cases. This role is appropriate for trainees wishing to undertake advanced obstetric modules in a different deanery or for doctors wishing to undertake further experience at any stage of their career or as part of their CESR application.

The Hospital
The Trust is one of the largest teaching hospital trusts in England, serving a regional, national, and international population. This position is based at the Women’s hospital and offers a complete range of Obstetrics and Gynaecological Services – delivering more babies than anywhere else in Europe annually! The hospital is one of the UK’s leading centres for obstetrics with expertise in premature baby care and regional Cytogenetics and Genetics laboratories on-site. The hospital is also the Regional referral centre for Obstetrics and houses the Regional Neonatal Unit and the Fetal Medicine Department.
The hospital also boasts an onsite nursery with extended hours and there are many good local schools including state, independent and grammar schools.
Main Duties
- Working under the supervision of the labour ward consultant anesthetists
- On-call will be as one of two anaesthetists out of hours covering the delivery suite (including theatre) and Gynaecology emergencies within a 1:8 on-call rota.
- In addition to labour ward duties, you will also gain experience in major gynaecology-oncological surgery and day case intravenous sedation.
- You will be expected to participate in the training of core trainees attached to labour ward.

- The Hospital has an active education programme aimed at supporting trainees at all levels of training.
- You will be encouraged and assisted with your FRCA examination preparation – both primary and secondary
- You will have the opportunity to get involved in the delivery of teaching (including simulation).
- The hospital also have a longstanding experience of supporting doctors outside training programmes. This includes support with CESR applications and assistance with achieving higher level subspecialty training.
- Applicants will have opportunity to undertake activities which support all the generic professional capability areas of work. This includes audit and QI, education, governance, research, wellbeing and sustainability.
Requirements
In order to apply for this role you will need:
- Full GMC Registration (or have been invited to your ID check in the UK)
- A recognised post graduate qualification (e.g. EDAIC, EDIC, MRCP, FRCA, USMLE)
- Great English language skills (evidenced via an OET or IELTS exam)
- Prior experience managing elective and emergency obstetric cases
- Confidence with providing epidurals and labour analgesia
