Registrar in Stroke Medicine

  • £55,320 - £75,000
  • London
  • Fixed

Specializing in stroke medicine as a doctor means working in a dynamic hyper-acute stroke unit, helping patients through rehabilitation, and playing an important role in discharge teams. There is a big focus on elderly patients, and collaboration with Geriatricians and Neurologists is essential. This opportunity is ideal for international doctors with a background in general medicine, offering a chance to contribute significantly to stroke medicine and neurology.

Main Duties:

  • Participate in daily ward rounds, led by a consultant.
  • Provide both inpatient and outpatient care for patients.
  • Further the supervision and education of junior doctors and medical staff.
  • Take part in the required on-call rota.
  • Attend multidisciplinary meetings alongside specialists in the Neurology and Acute Medicine departments.
  • Work alongside specialist nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, and speech and language therapists to aid the recovery of rehabilitated patients.
  • Attend stroke and rehabilitation clinics.
  • Partake in administrative duties, including research and clinical audit.

The Hospital:

The Trust has two sites, and this post will take place in the main acute hospital, which provides services in emergency medicine, cardiology, stroke, diabetes and endocrinology, and neurology, amongst others. The stroke team at the hospital is made up of consultants, registrar, and juniors, who all provide high-quality care for stroke patients and patients in rehabilitation. There are both inpatient and outpatient services, and the department is primarily based at one of the sites in the Trust. There is a Hyper Acute Stroke Unit, comprised of around 10 inpatient beds. This is a part of a larger Acute Stroke Unit, which has over 20 beds. The team often works closely with the acute and emergency teams, where thrombolysis patients may be needed. In this post, you will also have the opportunity to take part in a general medicine on-call rota, giving you a wide exposure to a variety of cases.

The location:

Whilst being near London, the Trust is located on the outskirts of the capitol, making it a much quieter and most affordable place to live. The area is known for having excellent independent and state schools, which is perfect for families who are looking to settle down in this safe and family-friendly area. If you’re looking to be in a busier environment with things to do, London is less than an hour away on the train. Two of the biggest airports in the UK are also less than an hour away, making it easy and convenient for visiting friends and family overseas, or exploring other parts of the UK.

To apply for this position, you will need the following:

  • Full MRCP or equivalent.
  • GMC with license to practice.
  • Experience with stroke cases/rehabilitation
