NHS Locum Consultant in Clinical Oncology in Lung and Lower GI

A leading regional cancer centre are looking to add an NHS Locum Consultant in Clinical Oncology to join their expanding Lung and Lower GI teams to provide specialist radiotherapy and clinical care to the centre’s surrounding catchment. Applicants wishing to take an alternative secondary site to Lower GI will be considered, however, Lung will be a prerequisite for the successful applicant. The applicant will be a senior member of the multidisciplinary Lung and Lower GI multidisciplinary teams and will be invited to join the Lung radiotherapy clinical trials team to strengthen their research portfolio. Individuals working towards GMC Specialist Registration via the CESR pathway will be assigned an Educational Supervisor and will receive guidance and SPA support to sign off competencies for their portfolio. This is a standard 10PA You can expect the following duties:

  • To provide comprehensive Oncology care with consultant colleagues in the management and development of site specialist cancer services.
  • Independently prescribing and managing patients for Lung and Lower GI
  • Planning RT for tumour site specific patients  
  • To liaise closely with surgeons, physicians and colleagues in other disciplines 
  • To undertaking teaching and contribute to postgraduate education
  • Participating in medical audit and continuing medical education
  • Attending relevant MDTs as senior contributor
  • Participating in peer review and QA meetings
  • Engaging with the recruitment and running of clinical trials
  • Providing telephonic advice in on-call rota with other consultant colleagues
  • Supporting professional activities (SPA)

Cancer Centre

The Trust is home to a regional referral centre with a core catchment area of 1.8 million. The main cancer centre is the lead adult radiotherapy provider in the region, providing radiotherapy treatments for 4x neighbouring Trusts that provide systemic therapies service for patients in the region. The cancer centre is linked a high-performing university teaching hospital, which boasts a very strong research base and large clinical trials portfolio. You will be working alongside a friendly team of clinical and medical oncologists, physicists, surgical oncologists, clinical nurse specialists and management to deliver top-tier cancer care across the region. The Department have a 24 bed bespoke oncology ward, which has been fully-refurbished, along with the out-patient clinical space, within the last year. Additional radiotherapy facilities include:

  • 7 Elekta Linear Accelerators, all of which are equipped with CBCT and many with flattening filter free treatment capability and equipped with Response ABC system.
  • Pinnacle and Raystation treatment planning systems
  • 2 dedicated Philips Big Bore CT scanners with full IV contrast facilities and 4D capabilities
  • Surface Guided Radiotherapy (SGRT) from VisionRT LTD
  • Superficial therapy unit (Xstrahl) – currently being replaced/refurbished
  • Brachytherapy service (in construction)

The Requirements

  • Full GMC Registration (or invitation to GMC ID check) – essential
  • Ability to work independently at Consultant level within Clinical Oncology – essential
  • Full FRCR (UK) or equivalent post-graduate qualification – desirable  
  • Previous NHS experience – desirable
