NHS Locum Consultant in Clinical Oncology

This is a new Consultant-level opening in a purpose-built Cancer Centre in the West Midlands. The Centre has a high degree of subspecialisation and are committed to continuous medical education, research and development. The role is divided into 8PA of clinical commitments and 2PA of Supporting Professional Activities. You’ll be joining a large multidisciplinary team, well supported by Consultants in Clinical Oncology and Medical Oncology, and you’ll be allocated a Mentor to monitor your professional development; the Mentor provided will be allocated based on your career goals, for example, doctors wishing to pursue CESR will be supported by senior leadership with experience in this area. There will be a structured induction period to ensure that you familiarise yourself with the Cancer Centre and Team; if this is your first NHS role, the induction will help you to acclimatise to NHS practice and understand NHS guidelines. The main tumour site requirement is Urology, and the secondary subsite specialisation is flexible. The job plan will be reviewed regularly, so there will be opportunities to cover a different tumour site according to your clinical preferences and the service needs. • Working as part of a multidisciplinary team
• Contributing to departmental meetings
• Planning radiotherapy and peer review
• Managing new patient and follow up clinics
• Prescribing SACT, supported by middle-grades and nurses
• Teaching and teaching junior colleagues, undergraduates and postgraduates
• Contributing to on-call rota (very infrequent, approx. 1:15)
• Engaging with continued professional development, including committing to a personal development plan and appraisal process
• Participating in Clinical Governance, such as maintaining audit and implementing service improvement
• Engaging with research and enrolling patients in clinical trials

Cancer Centre

This is a leading Cancer Centre which is part of a University Hospital in the West Midlands. This is one of the largest Trusts in the UK, caring for a population of over 3 million. Oncology outpatient services are delivered in the Cancer Centre and the Trust’s County Hospital. The Centre has a bespoke inpatient facility for oncology and haematology, which is well-staffed by Advanced Nurse Practitioners and Middle-Grade doctors. The Trust has an active undergraduate medical student teaching programme and provides high quality education and supervision to postgraduate trainees. In addition, there is a ‘Medical Training Initiative’ scheme so the department has excellent experience onboarding and training overseas trained doctors and supporting them with their first NHS role. The Radiotherapy services provide state-of-the-art facilities including Truebeam Varian, Halycon LinAcs, superficial/orthovoltage, CT simulator, brachytherapy and SABR.

Requirements

• GMC Registration with License to Practice (essential)
• Ability to practice independently at Consultant-level in Oncology (essential)
• Full MRCP (UK), FRCR (UK), or equivalent post-graduate qualification (desirable)
