We are working with a distinguished NHS Trust to recruit a Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist, with an interest in Cataract Surgery. This role offers an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic team dedicated to delivering exceptional eye care services.
The Role
- The successful candidate will join a team of six consultant ophthalmologists, focusing on general ophthalmology with a special interest in cataract surgery. Key responsibilities include:
- Performing high-quality cataract surgeries and managing general ophthalmic cases.
- Participating in outpatient clinics and contributing to the cataract suite's increased capacity.
- Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to provide comprehensive patient care.
- Contributing to the development and implementation of clinical protocols and guidelines.
- Engaging in teaching and mentoring junior medical staff and trainees.
The Hospital
Serving a population of approximately 230,000, the unit handles a surgical throughput of around 2,000 patients per annum. The unit boasts a cohesive team of doctors, nurses, orthoptists and technicians, all committed to providing the highest level of patient care. The successful candidate will have access to secretarial support and dedicated office space with appropriate IT facilities.

The Requirements
Essential Criteria:
- Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
- Completion of specialist training in ophthalmology
- Demonstrated proficiency in cataract surgery
- Ability to manage a wide range of general ophthalmic conditions
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Commitment to team working and continuous professional development
- Experience in cataract surgery
Desirable Criteria:
- Subspecialty experience that complements existing departmental services
- Experience in teaching and mentoring medical staff and trainees
- Involvement in clinical research and audit activities
