The Job:
This post is a full-time post to provide cover for a highly experienced Head & Neck Surgeon. The candidate should have a specialist interest in Head and Neck Oncology including Microvascular Reconstruction.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to the development and improvement in the treatment of H&N cancer in the Trust. OMFS surgeons are also part of the base of skull MDT. The successful applicant would work as the third member of the three Consultant OMFS team contributing to the MDT management of 200 new cases per annum from a population base of 1.3m. Further expansion of that team is anticipated due to growing service demand and reconfiguration.
The successful candidate will be expected to work as part of a highly cohesive, supportive and collaborative MDT. This post has the potential for being cross site.
All major Head & Neck Oncology surgery is performed at this hospital. The H&N team share an integrated timetable, cross-cover and team working is expected. In order to provide continuity and maximise use of resources, patients are under an umbrella of shared responsibility. Two all day lists, are shared (flexibly) and extended operating is routine; as required for major oncology cases.
Further development of a candidate’s special interest in other areas of Maxillofacial Surgery will be encouraged and there is scope to develop these interests on both sites.
The department has a fully function Maxillofacial laboratory which is equipped with up to date technology. The laboratory has intra & extra oral scanning facilities. It is equipped with 3D printers and 3D software for planning and image manipulation.
The Hospital:
This hospital is a designated Major Trauma Centre and OMFS are part of the trauma MDT. The successful candidate will be part of the on-call rota for Oral & Maxillofacial emergencies. Microvascular rescue is provided by the H&N team.
The Oral & Maxillofacial H&N Cancer surgeons work as part of a H&N Cancer MDT and close working relationships have been established with ENT and Plastic Surgery. The MDT has a population base of 1.3m and receives over two hundred new cases each year. They also form part of an established Skull Base MDT with colleagues from ENT, Neurosurgery and Plastic Surgery. There is an active development of H&N robotic surgery: modern techniques of reconstructive planning and microvascular surgery are employed.
The Department offers a full range of oral & maxillofacial surgical services with the exclusion of primary cleft lip & palate, syndromic craniofacial surgery and paediatric oncology.
The Department delivers care to approximately 5000 new outpatients and 2500 in-patients each year, across two Trust sites. The Department also offers outreach services in three other hospitals within a 20 mile radius.
The A&E Department sees approximately 105,000 new attendances per year and receives major trauma cases by land and air. It contributes to the UK Trauma, Audit & Research Network (TARN). It occupies a leading position in its survival rates from blunt trauma as evidenced by UK TARN. The site consists of a purpose-built self-contained unit comprising two suites of examination rooms, treatment rooms, recovery facilities, oral & maxillofacial laboratory, junior doctors’ room/seminar room, staff room and administrative offices. In-patient beds are provided by a dedicated multi-specialty Head & Neck ward. Emergency admissions are admitted to a trauma admissions ward. Teaching: The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to regular formal and informal teaching sessions for junior staff and undergraduate medical students with the rest of the consultant team. The successful candidate will be encouraged to take part in educational supervision for junior staff.
The Location:
Located in a large town in the Northeast of England, with good transport links to Newcastle in 60 minutes. This town has a wide variety of shops including international food stores. There are also several large retail parks.
Requirements:
- Full GMC registration
- FRCS (or equivalent) and MFDS (or equivalent)
- Clinical experience of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
- Experience of teaching and training undergraduate and postgraduate students, and junior doctors and dentists.
