The Job

This is an exciting opportunity to become a key member within the ICU team in a forward-thinking department, working alongside experienced Consultants to deliver the best quality of care to patients within the ICU. The job itself would be very well suited to an experienced overseas Consultant someone who is already working within the NHS but looking to join a supportive department where they can focus on CPD - there is a very friendly Consultant team who would be working alongside you to provide clinical guidance and career advice at all times. Anaesthetists with an interest in ICU are welcome to apply, however this role is would have an ICU to Anaesthetics work ratio of 2:1 or purely ICU and so would perhaps be better suited to intensivists with an acute/emergency medicine background. 

You would be joining the department of Intensive Care which is part of the ACT / Head & Neck Directorate, which incorporates Anaesthetics / Critical Care / Theatres / Sterile Services / Acute & Chronic Pain / Anaesthetic Pre-Assessment / Audiology / ENT / Oral & Maxillofacial / Ophthalmology / Optometry. There are modern well equipped, seven, eight & ten bedded combined HDU / Intensive Therapy Units across the Trust, accepting adult patients from all specialties.

The Department

The Intensive Therapy Unit (ITU) is a 9-bed area with a mixture of both intensive and high dependency level patients from medicine, surgery, and obstetrics. They admit approximately 480 patients a year and deal with many more at ward level via the Health Board's outreach service.

There are six intensive therapy Consultants, an anaesthetics core trainee undergoing their ITU rotation, ACCS Emergency Medicine trainees, an FICM trainee and an F1/F2 doctor. They attend all cardiac arrest / trauma calls, including emergencies in obstetrics and paediatrics. The main hospital site does not have a paediatric intensive care but, in conjunction with the anaesthesia team, they do provide the initial resuscitation and stabilization of the sick child before they are ultimately repatriated by a specialist team to a tertiary unit.

Working in the ITU you would see the sickest patients in the hospital, from emergency patients of all ages via the emergency department and wards, to major post-operative cases. You would also be part of a multi-disciplinary team where the day-to-day business will include the assessment and admission of patients requiring advanced airway (including tracheostomy) and vascular access skills, ward rounds, arranging and preparing patients for intra-hospital investigations and liaising with specialist teams. The senior team will ensure that you are supported to develop your clinical skills and career aspirations throughout your time with them. This may include exposure to organ donation, focused echocardiography, advanced research, further education opportunities and wellbeing development sessions.

Main Duties

  • You will be expected to deputise for absent colleagues and in exceptional unforeseen circumstances may have to perform additional duties to ensure the safe running of the department. Where such duties take place outside your normal contracted duties, you will receive either an equivalent off duty period or will be remunerated appropriately.
  • You will be required to participate in the Health Board’s (HB) risk management process and in clinical audit and other clinical governance activities within the department, the directorate, and the HB. Adherence to Caldicot Principles is mandatory.
  • You will be required to participate in the HB’s Appraisal Scheme in conjunction with your Supervising Consultant, to identify training and development needs. You will be expected to participate in personal and professional development to fulfil Royal College CME requirements.
  • You will be responsible for undertaking the administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the administration of the department.
  • You will be required to participate and contribute to Clinical Audit in line with the HB’s policy.


You will be encouraged to become involved with local departmental teaching; this involves the development and implementation of simulator-based teaching for Anaesthetic and ICM trainees in one of the 3G simulation suites supported by teaching mannikins and a comprehensive library of resources. You will also be involved in running a regular journal club, exam practice and critical incident scenarios.

The permanent members of staff have a range of expertise and many years of experience, along with commitments within the school of Anaesthesia, Royal College of Anaesthetists, Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine and Cardiff University. This will allow the successful candidate to enhance their experience with the Health Board and make the most out of this post with regards to their continuing professional development.


In order to apply for this role you will need:

  • Full GMC Registration (or you have been invited to the ID check stage) 
  • Recognised post graduate degree (e.g. EDAIC, EDIC, MRCP, FRCA, USMLE)
  • English Language Test (OET or IELTS)
  • EPIC verification (via the ECFMG) of your primary and post-graduate medical qualifications
  • Experience in a similar position overseas or locally (Consultant/Locum Consultant)
