We are working with a well-established NHS Trust in South East Anglia, seeking to appoint a Consultant Clinical Oncologist with a specialist interest in Head & Neck and Urology cancers. This is an exciting opportunity to join a well-established cancer care team delivering high-quality oncology services across a large and varied population.

Role and Responsibilities

This is a full-time, 10 PA post for a Consultant Clinical Oncologist with specialist focus on Head and Neck and Urology cancers. The role involves:

  • Delivering systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT) and radiotherapy for Head and Neck and Urology cancers.
  • Participation in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings and direct clinical care across outpatient, inpatient and chemotherapy services.
  • Weekly responsibilities include radiotherapy planning, outpatient clinics, MDT reviews, and SACT assessments.
  • The post includes participation in the consultant on-call rota (1:14, category B).
  • Contributing to the Acute Oncology Service.
  • Supervising and supporting junior doctors and specialist registrars.
  • Engaging in clinical governance, audit, teaching, and service development.
  • Administrative duties related to patient care and departmental function.

The Hospital

The Hospital is part of one of the largest NHS Foundation Trusts in England, serving a population of around 1.2 million people. The oncology service spans multiple hospital sites, with the cancer centre based at a well-equipped teaching hospital featuring a  22-bed oncology inpatient ward, including a radioiodine suite and en-suite side rooms. Modern SACT treatment units are offered across two hospitals. A comprehensive radiotherapy department is also equipped with:

  • 4 Elekta Agility Linear Accelerators (Versa HD platform)
  • Elekta Flexitron HDR Brachytherapy Unit
  • Canon wide-bore CT simulator
  • Monaco planning and Prosoma Core virtual simulation systems
  • Surface Guided Radiotherapy and AI autosegmentation (M Vision)

The centre offers specialised services in gynaecological and prostate brachytherapy and is one of the few UK sites delivering surface mould brachytherapy for skin cancers. The department is staffed by a multidisciplinary team including consultants, specialist nurses, radiographers, pharmacists, and physicists. There is strong infrastructure for training, education, and research.

The Requirements

Essential criteria:

  • MBBS or equivalent qualification.
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise.
  • On GMC Specialist Register for Clinical Oncology or within 6 months of attaining CCT at interview date.
  • Broad clinical experience and training in Clinical Oncology.
  • Specialist experience in Head and Neck and Urology cancers.
  • Ability to work independently in delivering clinical oncology services.
  • Experience in SACT and radiotherapy planning and delivery.
  • Effective communication and teamworking skills.

Desirable criteria:

  • MD or PhD qualification.
  • Published research in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Involvement in postgraduate or undergraduate teaching.
  • Interest or experience in clinical audit or service development.
  • Management or leadership training.
